p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Primes...20 or 24?

I am looking to add a prime to my bag and would like some feedback. I would use this for family get togethers and as part of my "walk-around" kit. This would also get some landscape usage. I have used a 35 in the past but for me it is a little too close to the 50 and would prefer something a bit wider.

I currently own the following primes...
*50
*85
*100 macro

I also have a Tokina 11-16 (which continues to get more use than I imagined it would).

I am definitely on a budget which means the new Nikon 1.8's are out. I am very satisfied and content with the two Nikon D lenses I have (50 and 85) and am looking at the 20 and 24 2.8D's. I am thinking with the Tokina going to 16 that I would be fine with the 24 as the 20 is so close to the 16.

Thoughts?

always difficult to answer questions about FL without knowing if you shoot crop or FF.
I am thinking crop, I guess, b/c you mentioned tok 11-16?

the nikon 20 1.8g, is better than the sigma art, and a lot lighter.
the 24mm 1.8g is amazing!
they are both N and ED and really good glass.

if you shoot people at all, go with 24, it will be > 20 for portraits and still good for landscape
if you don't need to worry about people, get the 20mm, it's a lot of fun.

if you have crop, then get the 20 and you're good to go!

20 or 24 /50/85 is a nice kit, either way.
good luck!

DUH! I knew I was forgetting something! Yes, crop it is. I am shooting a D7000.

Nikon 24mm 2.8 AF-D can be found for under $200. I have the early non-d version. I don't use it that often but for $160 off of craigslist, super small, and very sharp at f5.6 I don't have any real complaints.

no experience with the 20.

edit: the 24mm afd lens takes the same filter size as your 50mm 1.8d.

I like 24mm, but sometimes that is even too wide for me with people in the shot depending on how close I am. I actually really like 28mm

I have owned the 20/24/28/35
as you've suggested, each person has to find which one speaks to them.
currently have a 28 1.8g in the b/s forum.

I like the 24mm FL a lot. It is a bit dual purpose FL as that'll work well on either format without getting into weird focal lengths. It works well as 24mm on FF but you also get a FOV of a 36mm on a DX body, very close to 35mm on FX.

28mm sounds great on FX but 42mm FOV on DX seems a little strange. Can't say I've tried it but seems not wide enough and yet also not tight enough either.

I suggest the 24/2.8D, as you mention. 20 is a lot wider, and even 24 is pretty darn wide.

For people a 28 would be a better fit. Much less distortion for faces.
I have the 24/58/105 and I'm pretty happy with it.

Since you are on a budget and the Nikon 1.8s are out I would suggest buying a Sigma 20/24/28. They made them in all three FLs @ f/1.8 and can be had used around $300. Some say they are soft wide open but mine (20/28) are very acceptable wide open and very sharp stopped down to f/2.8. Just a suggestion if you're on a tight budget. One more thing - they are macros with very close MFD.

For a DX camera maybe a 20mm which would give you an equivalent FOV of 30mm FX.

On a D7000 you have the following equivalent FOV:

11-16mm equivalent to 17-24mm
50mm equivalent to 75mm
85mm equivalent to 128mm
100mm macro equivalent to 150mm

24mm would yield a 36mm equivalent FOV, which would slot nicely into your setup as a wide-normal lens. 20mm (30mm equivalent FOV) could also work well. It comes down to personal preference between the two focal lengths.

If you consider a zoom, for about $250 you could pick up a used Sigma 17-50/2.8, which is an excellent walk-around lens and also handles landscapes nicely (~26mm equivalent field of view at the wide end). If you do not use the 11-16/2.8 much you could sell that to cover the cost.

Good luck!

If you could state an actual dollar figure as your budget, and your willingness to buy used, that might be helpful.

You mention two Nikon WA D-series lenses. New, Nikon's 20/2.8 AFD is about $620 and the 24 about $540. New, the 20/1.8G is about $800 and 24/1.8G about $750. If you're thinking of getting a new AFD, I'd advise you to wait, save up a little more and get the G.

You're talking about the D7000. For landscapes/apertures beyond f/5.6, the 20 AFD would probably be just fine. For family stuff and tight interiors with poor lighting, or where you want to shoot a WA wide open, not so much. You'd be so much better off with the 20/1.8. For $180, it just doesn't make a lot of sense to get the older, slower AFD lens. Here's another recent thread on the 20 AFD:

When you start accumulating lenses, it slows down your photography and only makes things needlessly complex. Your logical solution is to sell the 11-16mm and replace with a 10-24mm.

I am thinking exclusively used. My budget fits the used D market. I do see the logic in the 10-24.

That's a very good point Kent, sometimes the best thing is to declutter our lens portfolio.

I like the 24mm f/2.8 D on FX and I liked it on my D7100. It's small, light, & sharp enough.

I'm a prime guy and went from:
*24
*50
*85
*100 macro

to:
*58

This image nothing special, but shot wide open and into the sun(ish). This image has not been edited at all and is SOOC jpeg. My daughter is fascinated with airplanes these days.

What about selling the 11-16 and buying the 11-20 f2.8. IDK if that fits in your budget, but it would give you more versatility, and less lens changing.

I mostly buy used myself. Here's some options, used from ebay. Keep in mind you will be able to get $300 selling your Tokina. Choices:

Tokina 12-24mm $200
Sigma 10-20mm f3.5 $250 (only consider this model)
Nikon 10-24mm $500
Tamron 10-24mm $200
Tokina 12-28mm f4 $300
Tokina 11-20mm f2.8 $440

I agree that having 24mm is more useful than having 20mm. The gap between 20mm and 50mm is pretty large. Usually I try not to have a gap that's more than double the wider lens. Having one zoom will decrease the bulk and weight of your bag, and improve your "work flow" with one less lens change. I would go for the Tokina 12-28mm f4. It's a good lens and it gives you 28mm, which is VERY useful. Rather than simply piling lenses into your camera bag, you would be better off reconfiguring. There is great value in simplifying.

I have indeed thought of that and remains an option, for sure.
