Here's another telephoto landscape for Ben!

What's the best way to address the eggy sun here?

This is where I settled on the foreground exposure, but I should have some wiggle room in either direction. I wanted to avoid bringing it up too much. Thoughts?

Thanks,

Jeff

May be one way to address the eggy sun is to crop some top out. I would also brighten some of the foreground to show the effect of the sun rays. That is how I see it but I wasn't there. So, the vision is yours.

Interesting shot, where are the rays? Must have been pretty foggy or hazy to shoot that directly into the sun without flare.

I would darken the entire sky and brighten the foreground. Maybe 1/2 stop each.

I like alot what Shasoc did. By brightening the foreground it created greater interest areas and more involvement in me exploring the image.

What a bunch of great images you've brought back from your trip.

Like the color rework
Had to play with a monotone. Not sure it improves, but what the heck.
Different crop.

I assume the banding around the sun is absent in the large file?

I've never seen this "egg effect" this harsh before. But then again, I've never used my 100-400II for landscapes before. Does the sooc raw file look like this or did this occur during processing?

I really like Socrate's direction he went with the rays. That really plays up on the heat of the savanna and helps offset the "eggy effect" IMO. Not sure about the crop suggestion though.

I like the aspect ratio you chose and also the amount of FG exposure you used.

I would say that it would have been haze. Thanks for your insight, Ben!

Monotone?!?! You crazy bastard! You know I'm always up for at least taking a look in mono. I believe the banding is played up in the very-much downsized JPG.

Thanks for your thoughts on the pic, Scott!

SOOC won't be as bad since I dropped highlights a lot to get more detail.

Thanks for your feedback, Dave! I think I'm going to take a little from everyone for the rework.

Sure would have been a good time to slap that 16-35 on your 5DSR and snapped a few bracketed shots of this scene.

just sayin.

Nah, was in the back of an open-air game vehicle just trying to snap off a couple quick ones before we made our way off into the bush.

TBH the 100-400 saw 99% of the action this trip.

Did you ever use (need) your 1.4X or did you have enough reach without it?

Oh, btw... I'm still waiting for a colored version of the big kitty cat (Anderson).

1.4x would have been helpful in the Kgalagadi where we couldn't go offroad and many of the sightings were birds who were sometimes quite far off.

In Sabi Sands the 100-400 was more than enough and at times borderline too long, but overall a great fit.

I know bro! I want to finish the first go-through (on the last half-day now) before I head back to start tweaking. I'll get those reworks and other versions up soon. It's been partly laziness on my part coupled with part of me not wanting to finish going through the shots as I feel doing so will "end" the trip.
