I find that the red ring can be covered up pretty well with a permanent Sharpie. Problem solved!

Canon designed the one on the 24-105 to fall off - or perhaps they do so in shame?

About the 35 f2 IS, one of the nicest points is the smart silver ring.

The 35 1.4 II is a stunning, completely amazing lens. Easily my favorite lens since I got it at launch. It rarely comes off of my camera.

That being said...please do not buy it just because "it has a red ring". If you can't take great photos with the 35 2.0, then the 1.4 probably won't make you satisfied either...

Good work, thanks for posting. At web size I don't think any of us can see many differences, except in bokeh quality. I don't care much about red rings. I do happen to have a couple of them, but not because of the rings.

Thanks guys, I really needed this. I decided on not going for the 35L ii. The 35 f/2 IS will definitely remain in my bag. As for the 24-70mm I think I will sell it and see how I fare w/out having 24mm on my wide end. Thanks for your input!

I should note I don't have the is version of the 35 f2. I will buy a used one eventually but my old 35 f2 non is is so good.

Have I mentioned I can put it in my GYM SHORTS pocket when shooting? Convenience beat the 1.4 aperture of my other 35

Rob, how do you find overall construction and AF? I know it's not USM, a little noisier - but does it seem solid?

It sounds a little louder, not as loud as the 85 but louder than the 50 macro. I wouldn't go bouncing it off of a wall or anything but I've let it in my shorts pocket for many evenings without a worry. Put it this way, unless I got MORE than it would cost for me to buy another 35 f/2, I wouldn't sell it AND I contemplate selling my 1.4 routinely. That's not to say that the 1.4 isn't better, but for the style of shooting I have, the f/2's size are more important to me. Note that it isn't the weight. I couldn't care less if they weighed the same. It's purely size.

I'd think that while it doesn't look more solid that the 50/1.8 (I), it should have the same build quality as the old 24/2.8; hell, they may all be on par, relatively speaking.

(the 50/1.8 II is most certainly one of Canon's lowest points!)

Why not the 40 f2.8 STM pancake lens? No love for it? Obviously not quite as wide as the 35 f2 but even less expensive and with very good IQ.

The 35 feels like an L lens in comparison to the 50 1.8, build and IQ speaking.

While the optics are nice, the lens is slow, vignettes heavily, and is slow to focus, while also not being stabilized.

The 40mm F2.8 STM is a nice lens to carry with my telephoto setup
gives a landscape option when out shooting wildilfe
Image Quality is good

What ISO setting do you need when shooting in there?

I am an amateur and bought the 35/1.4 L mkII, but I bought it for f/1.4 and the magic that 35mm focal length brings to images at such a wide aperture. I would say buy it if you find yourself wanting shallower depth of field and corner to corner sharpness, at the same time, otherwise it is a lot of money and a lot of weight and you are ignoring its main reason for being, which is shooting at f/1.4.

The same is true with the 50/1.2 or 85/1.2, only buy them if you plan to shoot them wide open most of the time. Stopped down, they are just a waste of money and a lot of back pain.

My EF 35/2 IS is far too useful for me to consider selling/trading when I finally do acquire a 35/1.4L II.

1. The 35/2 IS is nicely compact, which is, sometimes, necessary.

2. Image Stabilization is less necessary for wider lenses, but "less necessary" does not mean "never necessary." There are times IS makes a real difference, especially if I am fatigued, have had too much caffeine, or am pushing the hand-held envelope with a high-MP 5Ds R.

3. This may not apply to much of anyone other than myself, but I use a Macro Ringlite often, while shooting my forensic/evidentiary images, and the same Canon adapter that fits my EF 100/2.8L Macro IS fits my EF 35/2 IS, which is a very, very nice close-range wide lens. This afapter being relatively inexpensive, I bought a second one, which I leave on my EF 35/2 IS full-time.

An EF 35/1.4L II is on my long-term wish list. It can wait, because:

1. The 35/2 IS is really quite good, and

2. When I want to shoot in low light, with a 35mm lens, on full-35mm-format, I can use my Nikkor 35/1.4G on my D3s.

For what it's worth, there's a 72mm diameter version of the ring adapter, intended for the 180mm f/3.5 macro, which should fit the 35mm f/1.4 lenses.

Love my 35 IS F2. I had a 35L Mk1 which is deservedly a legend for it's IQ. I just don't like honking big lenses. The 35 F2 is a good compromise for me and as you have it, you know it's strengths. It's main pull for me was size and weight. I sold my 35L and bought the 35 F2 and I've not regretted it, ever. I'm also thinking that on the new M5, it would be a stellar faux 50mm.

Canon's 24mm f/2.8 IS is also a very nice lens, sharp, excellent render, small, and light. When you sell your zoom, get the 24 as a complement to the 35 f/2 IS!

Yes. THIS is Canon's best lens, IMO. For 3 years or more I shot only with this.
