p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Why no discussion about the 35mm f/1.4L II?

I should get in my copy tomorrow of the 35mm f/1.4L II from Canon in tomorrow. I'm super stoked about it, as I loved the Sigma Art, but just want weather sealing and something that I'll feel confident with for years with my weather sealed 1DX Mark II, not to mention better focusing and insane sharpness. However, I've realized that that I don't see many people posting about this lens here. Why is that? Do not many people have it, is it just a great lens and doesn't need discussion? Or something else entirely?

Pretty much cos' it seems near perfect.

Possibly owners of the new 35 are busy people - busy making images!

I'm betting few forum goers have them, while they're likely in many professionals' hands.

The reality is that it's a small niche of people that need a lens like the 35L II, and the 35/2 IS and 35 Art are both very sharp lenses with their own advantages (price, and then size, weight, and IS for the f/2 lens) that make the substantially higher price for the new lens hard to justify.

Hell, even the original lens when it behaves is more than most people need!

The 35L II has been discussed here, and on other forums. The discussions seemed to be brief, perhaps because the 35L II does not seem to attract the controversy that tends to drive long threads. I traded my 35L toward a zoom lens, with the long-range plan to eventually add a 35L II.

The EF 35/2 IS has not driven much extended discussion, that I can recall, either. It is a nicely compact lens that simply gets the job done; I have one of these, to use while I wait until I can justify the price of buying a 35L II. I plan to keep and use both of them.

Similar sentiments expressed here.

I can't really either, but have sold and will be selling other stuff to afford it. I have just fallen in love with the 35mm focal length and want to invest into a lens that I'll have for like a decade.

From everything I hear it is an excellent lens.

I suspect that you don't hear much about it because it is largely a sort of specialist lens at this point. As good as it is, more and more people look at the advantage of the extra couple of stops and compare it to the flexibility advantages of a good zoom and choose the zoom — and not just people who don't care about image quality.

I say this as a photographer who likes primes for some things and who used to use them quite a bit more than I do today.

That's understandable. I hope my 35Lv1 will be with me for at least another decade. And I am certain it will keep taking better pictures than me

My most loved least used lens! It is immaculately sharp even on a 5ds, so I'm excited to see what it can do with a 5d iv given the better DR and NR. When I realized how much sharper the 35 1.4 II was than my 16-35 f/4 I sold the 16-35. The trade off is being stuck at 35 mm.

Why is there a thread every few months about why there is no thread about some product that there are threads about?

If some one wants to sell their version one that's in very good to great condition to help fund the upgrade let me know. I compared the ver one to the vers two lens and besides the newer one being larger heavier and more elements I didn't see a difference.

That is very interesting because every comparison I've seen blows the version 1 away. Corner to corner sharpness looks way better, weather sealing has been confirmed by Lens Rentals (I believe) as the most weather sealed lens they've ever seen. CA is also way better in every single comparison I've seen by reputable people. All these things led me to the purchase.

The II is sharper, better built, less lens flaws (ca, flare) and focusses great. Most used lens for me at weddings.

If I could keep just one lens it would be this one (although parting with the 300 II would be hard )

I just re-bought the version 1 this month (had one earlier) after thinking about the two versions for quite a while. I have no doubt about any of the benefits you mention. However these happen to not matter to me personally. I don't need sharp corners at wide apertures and in the center the version 1 sharpness is excellent. CA is easy to correct and I don't shoot in wet weather (it's just my hobby). Bokeh is important to me and there the samples I've seen from the version 2 didn't convince me. Not to mention of course that it's large an heavy. So I've no doubt that overall the version 2 is optically better but the version 1 is just fine for me. Perhaps a few others think this way, hence not too many discussions about the 2?

I agree, I think it isn't a hot topic simply because of its price. Once it comes down in price it'll definitely be on people's wish list. It is literally twice the price of the V1. I wish I could have it. But I can't, unless I sell my 70-200mm f/2.8 IS ii... I have the 35mm f/2 IS which is actually my absolute favorite lens. I wish it were weather sealed though. I have taken amazing shots with it, and I love the 3D feel I get out of it. The wide aperture paired with the natural vignette at f/2 really focuses everything on your subject. In fact on other lenses I add vignette in Lightroom because of that special feel the vignette brings in. Honestly, 35mm if my favorite focal length, if I were to ever get the 35L ii I would probably keep the IS version for the IS, it has saved me quite a bit, even at a full second exposure things come out great!
For those of you who have thought about the 35mm f/2 IS go for it, I love it. I couldn't recommend it more, its sharpness, light weight, and performance are that of a much more expensive lens. Like I said, all it needs is weather sealing and it's a true "L" lens in disguise.

EDIT: I don't think weather sealing defines a pro lens. I live in California and I love to go to the beach, but when I get home there is a layer of salt water over all my camera gear, so I wipe it down with a damp cloth. I worry about my 35mm not being weather sealed because it limits where I can take it and how comfortable I feel. Getting sand in a lens could mean the end of it. I know its best to keep your lens away from sand as much as possible but the wind will carry it and there isn't anything I can do about that. In conclusion, if I had an extra $2000 laying around somewhere I wouldn't be complaining about weather sealing haha.

I'd love to get one, but I'll have to go with the Sigma Art or Tamron 35 f/1.8 VC for 1/3rd the price. However, I'm also torn between 35mm and 50mm, I sold my older Sigma 50 f/1.4 nearly a year ago but haven't replaced it and can't decide between a fast 50 or 35. The Tamron 45mm tweaked my interest but I've read the CA is really bad, but it's a nice oddball FL that would suit me. I'm going to wait and see what Canon offers in the 50mm range, if they could do a non L 50 f/1.4 IS that was under $1K I'd probably jump on that.

Yeah I sold my 50L before I purchased the Sigma 35 Art, and was glad I did. However, I just wanted the extra features that the new 35L II has, so it's worth it to me to sell some other stuff. I'm getting more minimalist as time goes on anyways. I love the 35 focal length after coming from the 50. It just allows for so much more in the frame, without distorting it too much. I also sold my 135 and got the 85L II, so the 35mm and 85mm are a great combination for me.

Why were you glad to get rid of your 50L? I am thinking of getting one. I don't know how I will react to the CA and the terrible corners, but it is supposed to give a "magical" feel to the images.
