Focus shift would only be a problem when stopping down the lens, never wide open. As I understand it, focus shift is when the plane of focus shifts backwards when the lens stops down, just before taking the shot. My 85 1.8G certainly doesn't suffer from focus shift, and I don't think that is generally a problem with this lens design. I would test it out in a controlled environment, and then see if the lens is flawed in some way. That said, I mostly shoot mine at f/2, it just tidies thinks up a bit with that slightly stopped down aperture.
