p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Question about in-camera noise options

Body: D810

Having played around with the options in camera for noise, I wanted to know what others were doing. I like to shoot long exposures (stars, milky way). I shot 3 different shots, and my

All off (Long Exposure NR, High-ISO NR)

- Results: A bit of more visible noise, but much more clear and sharp images.

Long Exposure NR (ON), High-ISO NR (OFF)

- Results: Again, a bit of visible noise, not much difference from All-Off.

Long Exposure NR and High-ISO NR (ON - HIGH)

- Results: Reduced noise but diminished clarity and sharpness of images.

My question is, is the in-body Noise Reduction good, or is post-processing NR better? When I shut all the in-camera NR off, I saw much more detail in everything. I'll post pictures of the test soon. Curious what people are doing when shooting night/dark or long exposure shots.

Long exposure NR is dark frame subtraction and affects the RAW file. It is worth doing unless you have some fancy astro photography software way of doing it

High-iso NR does not affect RAW files and generally looks pretty bad (smeary loss of detail). Do it in post.
