Really depends on your personal preferences and priorities

From a 'technical' point of view, the Sigma IMO is in many respects 'superior' to the Nikon: Better sharpness wide open, better corner sharpness, no 'sombrero' sharpness curvature.

But if you're more interested in how the final image may look like, i.e. bokeh, image rendering etc. (and don't care for corner to corner sharpness) the Nikon for many is a better choice.
That was indeed the reason for me to get it, but admittedly I have a preference to 'imperfect' lenses (Nikkor C 1.8/85mm, Nikon 1.4/85 AF D, 2/135 DC, Petzval 2.2/80mm)

Answer this question: for your work, what makes either of these lenses more desirable than a 50/1.8G?

What the others wrote, plus: these two are completely different lenses. Browse through hundreds of photos on the Net (e.g. look for flickr groups, or browse through this thread avoiding the discussions about sharpness ) and decide on what you see: which rendering do you like better, which lens suits your style more.

58 1.4G. I had 2 Sigma 50mm 1.4 arts and the bokeh is distracting looking imo-it's a sharper lens than the 58-but sharpness isn't everything.

Depends on what you shoot, and your style. Very different lenses--I had zero trouble deciding which one for me.

I'll add that my method of picking lenses seems to be different from many here. I first determine what shots I'm missing, or what my current gear isn't doing as well as I like. I have very specific kinds of shots in mind. I then take a look to see what's available that might be able to do what I want. Every lens or bit of gear I've purchased was acquired to do specific jobs. I don't often have a job needed the strengths of the 58mm. I often have photos I want to take needing the Sigma 50mm strengths. When you start your search by thinking of the photos you take, and your style, these kinds of questions automatically disappear.

Sigma 50 Art if you like sharpness.

Jar of Vaseline if you like the 58G magic.

The Siggy is clinically sharp, whereas the N 58 is quite the artsy lens. It depends upon your particular interests and intended uses. If you want a sharp lens for a variety of uses, indoors or outside, it's the Siggy. If you want unique outdoor portraiture with exquisite bokeh, and the like, the N 58 is the lens.

Nice comparision above. You can clearly see that the 58G has a softer look, and for some kinds of photography that works very well, as it does here. OTOH, what you can't see in these smaller photos is that if there was a fly sitting on the fender, with the 58G you could tell it was a fly. With the Sigma you could count its legs. All depends on what your priorities are.

Yeah the Sigma is definitely sharper wide open by a big margin, super close to the 55mm Zeiss Otus. The 58mm will look soft on a D810 (I know, used to own one) full rez wide open, where as it will look really sharp on a D3 due to the low resolution sensor. Like you said, depends on your priorities...

The sigma is clinically sharper than the 58 but the 58 just gives a nicer OOF area and transition. This is why I choose to own both. i want both looks with similar FOVs when I want it.

really thinking about that 105....

There's a significant amount of sample variation reported on both of these, so make sure you get a good one! If you're buying new, definitely pick some place that it is easy to return to.

Tis true! I went through 4-5 58mm and 5 50 Art. Takes work to find good ones.
