is the tamron better? just wondering, as i keep hearing about this lens.
I have both. As for IQ/sharpness, the Tamron is at least as good if not better, read: slightly better in some areas, equal in others, maybe not quite as good in others but I don't know where it isn't at least as good except that it doesn't go to 14mm. The real benefit (for me) is that it goes to 30mm and has VC. I find that I swap out to my 24-70 less with the extra range at the long end when traveling. I know some don't see the advantages of VC on extreme wide angle lenses, but trust me, it is a benefit. You can up the aperture for better DOF whilst keeping the ISO low, and you can shoot in lower light by a good 2-3 stops. Only drawback is it is a slightly bigger and a slightly heavier than the 14-24 and still has the filter issue and bulbous front element like the Nikon - for me the slight extra weight and size is not an issue.
The 14-24 is a legendary lens and for it's time a wonder and still worthy of the legendary status it is still a superb lens. However, other lens makers have inevitably caught up.
