p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Replacement "gasket" for Nikon 300mm f/2.8 AF-S ED-IF???

I have an older (circa 2000) 300mm f/2.8 AF-S D lens. When I purchased it, I noticed that the previous owner had put gaffer tape in the "channel" at the end of the lens into which the screw on the lens hood is secured to the lens. I believe the prior owner must have done it in order to create a more stable connection in order to prevent the hood from falling off.

Anyway, the gaffer tape is getting very ratty and I have removed it. When I look at the end of the barrel, I now see a channel around the entire circumference. When I go to attach the hood, it is not at secure as I would like it.

My question is, for those of you that have this lens, is that channel supposed to be bare metal or does yours have some type of "gasket" in it? If so, I am hoping that I can go to a Lowes or plumbers' supply and see if they one that will fit.

Thanks!
