However, having used the D500 + 80-400 extensively recently on boat trips shooting Sea Eagles, all I can say is that my results were superb. The AF is fast accurate and sharpness is excellent.
I've looked at the other options but have also stayed with the Nikon 80-400mm AFS. No, it's not quite as sharp as some other choices, but none the less it IS sharp. For me, it's sharp enough and other attributes made it a "best choice" for me. For starters, it's nano coated and resists flare better. This is important when I photo on-coming railroad trains. It's AF is very crisp and accurate, but best of all is its compact size. It's much easier to travel and hike with. It's not the best lens for any specific task, but overall I think it's the best general purpose lens. Since it begins with 80mm, for me that means I can get away with carrying only three lenses on high altitude hikes--24mm PC-E, Sigma 50mm f1.4A, and Nikon 80-400mm AFS. This cuts down on weight with a very low cost in ultimate sharpness. How you actually use a lens is just as important as the test scores.
