p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Family Session (Adoption Reveal) 2016

Congratulations to KristinSmall for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 4 votes - View Previous Winners

I had the privilege of shooting a family that was in the process of adopting two young children. They wanted some shots in places that are special to them to have for a surprise reveal. The adoption was finalized recently, so I thought I'd share my work here. I have to admit that I can be put off by family sessions. They are much harder, esp. with getting so many people coordinated, looking at the camera, and looking good! It's a minor miracle to do it perfectly every time, so I did some head-swaps and other adjustments for these, but I have to say that this was one of the most fun family sessions I've ever done! Even more astonishing considering that I am a perfect stranger to the children and it was super hot and humid that day!

Here are some of my favorites. Feel free to ask me anything!

1.) I had some trouble figuring out how to make those letters look like carved wood in PSE. It still is just an OK effort, but the idea works pretty well!

2.)

3.)

4.)

5.)

6.) I took individual portraits of each family member.

7.)

8.) The happy siblings.

Great moment well captured. You can see the chemistry of the session reflected in the countenance of the little boy --- a stiff smile in #2, disconnected in #3 --- and glowing #8. The set says a lot about the family --- and speaks volumes about your personal and professional interaction with the family.

Great job, got my vote.

Thank you so much! The kids were pretty tough at first, esp. the boy. I was worried that they would not relax, but we let them throw rocks in the nearby river for awhile and that seemed to help loosen them up.

Thank you!

Thanks, jefferies1 -- I still have no idea how I did it. (Followed some You Tube video, which was quite convoluted.)

5 is my favorite. I think 3 would be substantially better if it had the background of 8. The tree on the left of 3 bothers me for some reason.

Great session.

Thanks for sharing.

Can I ask for some help? -How did you shoot 5?
I seem to have trouble with focus when the subjects are walking away from me.

Thanks again for sharing, I like all of the poses

Hi Jon -- thanks for the feedback. Interesting thoughts! #5 was one of the few that were not posed. We were just heading back to the house when I saw mom holding the two kids' hands and walking in that glorious light and shadow, so I had to do a quick few snaps before she walked out of it. I just focused on mom's back and had a decent DOF (2.8) It was a bit of luck with just grabbing the moment.

Excellent series Kristin, great use of light, and compositions are simple but well seen.
2, 3, 5, and 6 are my favorites, but all are very well done.

Kirk

HUGE congrats on a well deserved FTOW.
