That's definitely more than I was expecting. I hope to see very little sample variation and optical improvements for almost 3x's the price of the non-AF version.

It'll be interesting to see comparison shots versus the existing Rokinon MF 14mm. Based on the lens element specs it seems like it theoretically should have less distortion. It's nice that it's smaller and lighter as well, although at 2.5x the cost.

When you're one of three companies branding and selling AF lenses for a mount, and two of those companies are selling their lenses at a premium, it doesn't take much to look reasonable in comparison, particularly when you're covering a focal length neither of the others cover.

I'm not saying it will be worth the money, but until there's another competitive option, it just needs to look more attractive than adapted solutions or the wide end of the 16-35.

Strange... it seems like a lot of people buy the manual version for astro and landscape. AF wouldn't be much help for those purposes, and for 2-3x the price too.

This one *should* have better IQ. Wide angle designs can seriously benefit by now having a mirror box and also getting the rear elements closer to the sensor is almost always a good thing. However it is too early to tell.

I don't think the price is out of line if it delivers the goods. Look at the Canon 14 at over $2,000 and delivering meh results.

True but brand name matters like it or not when it comes to how much you can ask for an item before people complain. lol
I do hope they can deliver the goods now that they decided to get into this price level. Their 135mm F2 is pretty much without equal and I am still hoping they bring it with AF next

$50 more than the CV 15, it's wider, faster and it has AF. I'd like it to be cheaper too, but if this were a Sony branded lens it'd be $1500, GM or Sony/Zeiss and it would be more.

Cheers

Chris

Really happy to finally see a full frame E-mount specific design, rather than just adapting an SLR design. Gives me hope for an FE equivalent to the Samyang 12mm f/2, a prime in the range of 18-21mm f/2-2.8, MF, and $500.

I also wonder if that era is over, now that they have AF.

Film era lens with low distortion- the 14/2.8L II could use an update, but it does have it's place.

samyang FB page was saying that it'll be between 4-600, then the marketing team did some research, and bumped up the price...

voigtlander did the same

Smaller than the E-Mount MF 14/2.8 but still the same size/weight as the dslr versions (sans adapter of course).

If we were going to benefit from that shorter flange distance in a mirrorless design to save space, I'd rather they used that extra space to make the lens smaller/lighter rather than using it to stick an AF motor on a 14mm lens. If this were the 135 or 85 we were talking about it would be a different story.

I had the Nikon version for several years and paid $300. I got images that beat my 14-24 in some aspects. I miss that lens.

the E mount SY MF 14/2.8 weighs in 570g

AF 505g.
DxL 87 x 122.1 mm vs 85.5 x 97.5 mm

So an addition of AF, 65g smaller and 1" shorter. That's a moderate size savings considering the SY is fairly front heavy, the weight would be noticeable. The fact that it's 1" shorter IS the benefit of a smaller design. Compare a DSLR mounted with MF SY vs A7x with AF SY, the size will be substantially different.

Dustin, it was one of your shots posted here that persuaded me to buy the Samyang 14mm!
You got some stellar results with yours.

Right, I think you're missing my point though.

Yes when mounted on E-mount this is shorter than the MF version when mounted on E-mount. I said as much in my post.

My point is that it's still the same size as the F/A/EF Mount versions of the MF lens. That shorter flange distance is supposed to provide an advantage. That is, when we wait 2 years to get a mirrorless specific design with shorter flange distance it generally results in a smaller/lighter lens than our DSLR bretherens have to live with because of that shorter flange distance (the main exception being ultimate IQ lenses like the GM line). I didn't switch over to wait a few years and get all excited for a mirrorless specific design that finally gets me....the same size lens I could have had on a DSLR all along. At thrice the price, no less.

Granted, the mirrorless design did get us an advantage. It's just that that advantage (AF) is one most people aren't going to use at this FL. If we were talking about the 85/135 that would be different. Yeah, I'll take AF without a size increase as a nice advantage to using that shorter flange distance. At 14mm it's not so exciting and I would rather have had a smaller lens than I've already had all along for my backup Nikon system. I'm not sure how much smaller it would have been but that AF system is taking up a non-zero amount of space and weight.

Again though, if this corrects the distortion while keeping the same optical qualities then maybe it will still be worth it.

Sigma Art pricing. They might justify this in a few years, but not current state. Expensive lenses need a support and service network. Do they have one?
