Hoping to get one of these and a cheap film body and make some portraits on my last stash of Provia 400x - any one rendering better than the other?

Not to be not be helpful, but why not compare the Nikon 80-200 2.8 to the Mino 80-200 2.8, or the beer can to a similar slower Nikon zoom?

I'd say the Beercan if you're doing more portraiture and the Nikon if it's more landscape. Both draw nicely, neither is perfect.

Well, the beer can is $100 and the 80-200 is $300-350, the others are way more

The Minolta 80-200 2.8 is between $500 and 700. And it is an incredibly special lens.

Nikon 80-200/2.8 (any iteration) is a better lens than the beer can 70-201/4.

What makes the Nikons better, Peire?

Have you considered the Canon FD 80-200mm f4 L? Cheaper than the Nikon and probably better than the beercan. Said to be the best pre EOS zoom that Canon ever made. Also modest in size and weight while being prime quality.

It probably isn't better than a good Beercan. Problem is that Minolta made so many of them, and a lot got beat up. A good Beercan is an amazing lens. Some folks did a comparison to a 70-200/4 L. While I don't quite agree with their conclusions, the images tell a pretty good story of how good the Beercan is.

I have owned 10 to 12 of them. 3 were exceptional, 1 was very, very good, the rest were just good.

Minolta 80-200mm f/2.8 is the only proper comparison.
You can get a beercan for like $40. But I'd rather pay $600 for a Minolta 80-200 G HS. Lightning fast focus, and sharp all around.

Thanks, I know the 80-200 2.8 is legendary, and the beer can has a reputation, like the 105 2.5 Nikon does, but was wondering if the Nikon was that far behind, or if people just don't talk about it

Remember seeing a really good lens test of the mf nikon 80-200/2.8. Is that the lens you are referring to? Haven't seen many (any?) used ones. Definitely a lens I'd like to get, but already have an 80-200/2.8 Tamron Adaptall 2 that isn't seeing a lot of use

What is the beercan? Had an MD 70-210 I liked.

Minolta made Leica's 80-200, but not sure how good a 70's zoom is.

Have you seen a comparison with the FD f4L? I haven't. But then again, I'm not sure there are giant differences between the better older zooms like the beercan vs the AI 80-200mm f4 though the 80-200mm f4L is the only manual zoom I've seen where people tested it as consistently better than a lot of well known Canon primes like the 200mm. The newer zooms at over $600 are a different story as those have autofocus too.

Minolta 75-150 F4 is my recommendation.
