Shot my nephews baseball game a while back. Canon 1D Mark II with Sigma 120-300 2.8 here's a few of the keepers. Any feedback always appreciated.

Many of these feel a little soft, or maybe noisy its hard to tell. Given how tight the framing is I'd expect sharper detail from this combo. I'd be curious to know your settings.

I shot my son pitching with my nikon d800 with a sigma 120-300, cropped in post somewhat and through the fence but the results seem sharper.

Totally. Looking at the image of your son (great shot btw) side by side it's clear my set is super soft. Was dealing with a little noise and over exposure in post and used a little shake reduction to try clearing that up. I just threw threw it on AV and had at it so i'm not exactly sure what my settings were, rookie move. Learning moment as I post more and more on fm. Curious if you clicked and went through or just scrolled.

I scrolled. Interestingly on the click and move through they appear sharper, the compressed size helping perceived sharpness maybe?

Yea that's what i noticed looking through some other threads. What size is the image you posted of your son? I cropped to 4x6 at 300dpi. About 2MB....also looking back at the file info..settings were 1/2500s, iso200 F2.8.

1000px on the long edge, dpi doesn't matter.

Others can chime in re: settings but my 2 cents having shot MilB (and a lot of day games) is that every baseball photographer has to with learn to deal with shadows under the brim. They are the enemy. There are two ways to address it.

The first is to wait for the player head angle to change (not always possible, of course, but can be done with pitchers) the other is to master the use the Adjustment Brush and Shadow Slider in Lightroom. While not perfect, it will typically do enough to bring out the eyes, which is often the difference between a keeper and a delete. It would wok very well on some of these shots and is a cinch to use.

@PureMichigan good call. I've never really found an effective way to remedy that without completely botching the image. I'll give that a whirl in LR. Thanks.

My rule of use is... take it to where it looks "really good" -- and then back it off by 25%. It's easy and tempting to get carried away with it. It's ok to be a little underexposed there -- if you go too far you get an overexposed racoony effect.
