p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · The wedding experiment - not what I thought

Hi guys,

we recently talked about that I wanted to go to a wedding but not be in charge.

Did nor work out as I thought. Many of the ideas I had in mind I could not do because of the circumstances...
I ended up to shoot the wedding as I normally would. Still, some images that I made where new for me. I think I need more often to give me a "goal" before a wedding.

However, I took only the Leica M9 and a Sony A72 with a manual tilt lens. Wouldīt have done that without this freedom of not being in charge. And to my surprise it worked very well. What a great feeling to shoot a whole wedding manually.

Heiko, they are nice but I agree with you. It didn't work. It is solid, but not liberating. I think you did not let your self go yet.

Next time, go with Leica only and one lens. This forces you to be creative. T/S is nice, but a trick. You want to be creative. So one cam, one lens, one light.

free yourself.

This is the story of wedding photography for me and why I moved to doing fashion work for creative fulfilment. Creative fulfilment in a pressured preordained structured day with expectations on the work produced I think is fighting a closing battle.

For some reason wedding photographs don't seem to seek out to do their own personal work to get this like photogs in other types of photography do.

(this is just general commentary btw, props for doing this and seeing how it went)

I agree and why I suggested in the other thread to do a set up/ non wedding shoot.
You just can't do what you want or take the time you often need when you are on a real wedding with the many restrictions, not the least being time and locations, that you can when you are shooting set up shots. You can have the best looking most cooperative couple and if things are at a crap location with nothing interesting in the area, you're screwed.
How many times has this happened to me where I have thought " If only we were at this location the pics would be stunning". And it's not about the most beautiful spot either.
Give me a grubby back alley somewhere over a boring arse park full of pretty flowers and crap any day.

Some may feel it's not valid to do non weddings for promo use and I agree however it's another case of not being able to have your cake and eat it too.
Either fulfil your creative urges by setting things up exactly as you want so it's all your doing or make the most of what you are given and hope for the best.

Thatīs true. Because as the hired photographer you have the obligation to create a product, which is useful to the couple and meets their expectations.
But thatīs the same in fashion photography. You rarely get a "card blanche", most times the client/agency will tell you even beforehand, what they want. And deviating from this given path is probably a wy to get never booked again, even though you image might be groundbreaking creative.

This is true. With fashion though, the split between paid and personal work is even more skewed, fashion guys spend the majority of their time on tests and editorials that pay them nothing all done to get their name and style out in the right places. This is to get paying work (ads/commercial/whatever) work as close to the stuff they like to produce as possible but it is generally well accepted that it ends up being a compromise to get paid just like weddings are.

Pretty much your usual stuff, I don't see anything markedly different. Albeit very good. Maybe you need to do this a few more times to get to the point where you want to be.
