Welcome to the PC Forum.

It's not a bad idea ... but, it does have its challenges to contend with.

The first thing that comes to mind is the small amount of area the subject presents, means that your camera set its exposure based on metering the background ... resulting in a significant overexposure of your subject.

Likely, you would want to set your exposure manually for the lighting that will be on your subject instead. (e.g. Sunny 16).

Again, welcome to the forum.

Yes, for critters that fly, you need to sit your exposure manually for the critter and in many cases you need to prefocus as well. Af can sometimes focus flying birds, but doubtfully something as small as a butterfly.

And welcome to the forum.
