Doesn't matter the cost, if I'm not using an item, and I'm not emotionally attached to it, I sell it. I don't like collecting gear.

I buy camera bodies new and all lenses used. I do not buy expensive telephoto lenses or other specialty lenses. I rent those for trips. I've saved about half of my money on lenses that way, have assurances that my camera sensor is good and it has never been dropped off a mountain or similar and don't waste money on lenses that I do not use on any given week. For instance, I own my 24-70, 100 prime, 40 pancake and a 200 short tele, but rent 100-400 for wildlife trips and 16-35 for landscapes. That saved me about 2 thousand plus dollars and lets me spend a couple hundred on rentals per year, never having my gear get old or out dated.

I've rented a few times but it's very rare that I do so. It's usually a unique lens that I'm not sure about like an 85/1.2, 24 TSE, and the push/pull of the 100-400mk1.

Nowadays my gear purchases are from the Canon Refurb store as it's in like-new condition with full warranty at far lower prices then new. If I end up selling it I'm out less money.
