I shoot with a D750/D810 combo. But, after the D500 came out I desired a DX camera for longer reach and stumbled upon the D300...once a mighty camera (still is). I got it here for $225! That is less than a decent external hard drive. I figure it might be great to use outdoors with a 70-200. The only concern is the 1 card slot. Anyway, anyone here still shoot a D300?

...yes $225 (I remember it was quite expensive and that was not long ago)

Hmmm, I dunno because they have some of the best colors of any dSLR, ever? One of my associates still uses one ... outdoors ... with a 70-200. The images dance and sing.

Get a D300s for around $300 if you are concerned about dual cards. I miss my D300s, great camera for short money.

I keep a D7100 for the reach (plus it is in the same battery family as the rest of my bodies). Good DX cameras out there for no money at all. Better still, D7100 (though lighter build) can play at night.

I do hate to be the barer of bad news, but your D810 is a much better DX camera than the D300. D300 will lag in AF and low-light capability, and has a lower pixel density to boot. So actually, you have more reach by cropping from your D810 (or shooting crop mode) than you do with the D300.

The D810 is not a camera I want to bring to the lake and mountains on vacation to take photos of birds from a canoe. $225 and a cheaper lens is better to lose than a D810 and 70-200 2.8 in the lake.

Ahh yes, I was thinking about it in terms of wedding usage. For a beater/adventure/outdoor camera, there is probably no better bang for the buck than that!

I have owned the D300 for a couple of years now and think it is a really nice camera! If it weren't for the dynamic range of the D800's I would not have any incentive to upgrade. I know others appreciate the high iso ability of some newer cameras as well and have upgraded and left the D300 far behind.

In other words, when used in decent quantity of light it works really well and at a bargain price today.

I still have a d300s, and I wanted the S for the dual card slots. But after having it for so long, the more desirable feature now is the quiet shutter mode.
