$2200 seems like a reasonable intro price. It's not ever going to be a high volume lens.

I didn't see anything about it being compatible with TC's. It would be cool to use one to get a 147 f1.8 or 210 f/2. It would definitely up the value proposition, lol.

Uh… that'd be a 147mm f2.0 or a 210mm f2.8. You lose one stop and two stops respectively with 1.4 and 2.0 TCs.

Guys, seriously? So many complainers, just to type up some complaint!! Pathetic...

VR on a 105mm that has an aperture of 1.4?
Do you need VR on a legendary 85mm f/1.4G that lots of PROS use?
What will an extra 20mm do to your current shooting technique with an 85G?

You will use this lens mostly for portraits in good light.

Shooting at night? You better develop an OCF technique if you want fantastic results, like from the samples posted earlier.
When you shoot with an OCF, you can now go at a lower shutter speeds, even as low as 1/50 because flash will freeze your subject.

Ouch! $2200 is a little steep... I think I'll pass for now.
Besides having AF, I don't see this lens beating the Zeiss 135/2 which is only about 1400 used.
Maybe I'll try one when they start appearing on the B&S in a couple years..

Your history of the replies to this announcement is priceless

I see a lot of complaints of no VR on this lens. It is geared towards pros and by pros I mean people that earn a full time living from portraiture. Pros don't need VR at this FL, it's an f/1.4 and when combined with today's ISO capabilities they won't need VR unless they are shooting in a cave.

I mean, the 105/2.8 Micro has VR, so....it's not just sports lenses or anything like that.

Key word: MACRO.

I know what a macro needs the most... a VR, yes.

Because when shooting with a macro lens, one must stop down a lens quite a bit, several stops. f/8-f/16, etc
Even in good light...

Who in the world buy a 105mm f/1.4 for stopping my down, never mind stopping down to f/8 or more? Come on man...

Yep, the Dover twins, Ben and Ilene....Did you mean steep or deep?

I think I'll wait for Sigma's next move, and be happy with some Zeiss glass until then. When I bought the 85 Milvus, my wife looked at it and there was no way I could convince her that it was "inexpensive".

wondeful look, sounds very sharp too, price is low IMHO when compared to serious top portrait lenses alternatives, meaning MF.

This may replace my Otus 85mm f1.4.

cheers,
bernard

OCF + rear curtain sync can't save your shutter speed to freeze subject.

But this is a good lens for sure. $2200 to purchase a baby 200 F2 is not a bad option. 100 F1.4 can give awesome bokeh like 200 f2 does.

Maybe it's been a long day at work, and my brain isn't working right now, but I also don't understand what you mean by this last part. Why wouldn't 1/50 show motion blur?

It's not going to look as good as the 200 F2.

Someone feel free to chime in if I have it wrong, but if you are using the strobes to over power ambient light and as the primary source of illumination, then it is possible to freeze action via the flash. F64 iso100 1/50th as an example. If you were using the strobes as fill flash to balance the ambient then you would still incur motion blur. F4 iso 1600 1/50th. While the sensor would be exposed and gathering light for 1/50 the flashes duration would be substantially shorter, and the flash duration would act as your effective shutter speed rather than the shutter itself.

I don't get these comparisons with a used 200mm f/2. A 105mm lens vs. a 200mm lens is similar to comparing a 58mm lens with a 105mm lens. It's only relevant if you're a camera collector, and in that case, the 200mm looks way more impressive.

It will look different compared to the 200mm f2, but will be a much more versatile tool being much more compact and lightweight.

This could be used for PJ work or as a walk around lens. I have been using the Otus 85mm and Voigtlander 125mm APO a lot as walk around lenses and I can see the new Nikon do a great job for such applications where the name of the game is to render the most aesthetically possible version of a given light situation.

Cheers,
Bernard
