May pull the trigger on a 4002.8 IS. Anyone using one? Or would an 500/600 be better..

It depends. I'm probably saving up for the 500mm f4 just because its less heavy and would be easier to hand hold when I need to.
The 400mm f2.8 is a phenomenal lens though, you can really get amazing photos with it.
I would say the 400mm f2.8 or 600mm f4 would be your best choice if you don't mind not being able to hand hold (newer versions might be lighter, I can't afford so I'm speaking from the older version standpoint).

Good luck with whatever you buy!!

What are your main subjects?

For birds I'd go for more of a 500 f/4 or 600 f/4. I think 400 2.8 is only really of value for birds in rainforest type environments where 2.8 is worth more than the extra reach. If you are shooting larger animals than 400 2.8 would be a very good option. Especially if you will take advantage of the f/2.8 during dawn and dusk.

If you won't take advantage of the f.2.8 then 400 f/4 DOII is an excellent option. 200-400 is another great option.

400 2.8 is a wonderful lens, one of the sharpest of Canon line up. I started with it because i shoot a lot of soccer. and it is the preferred lens for professional sports shooters. I have used it for about 10 years and love it. I added an 800 5.6 four years ago and mostly use the 400 for sports now. I shoot soccer for a Swedish magazine so have to keep it. It depends on what your main interest is, but if you shoot a lot of birds, then highly recommend the 600. You can also get a used 800 for a good price now. I agree with Aritrage and have heard really good reviews of the 400 DO version 2. Good luck with your choice. You might want to rent a 400 2.8 and try it to see if it meets your needs before you buy.
