Apparently coming out this week... Any takers?

Sounds perfect for portrait work, I can't wait to see how it performs.

Take THAT, Canon!

If the $2100 price is correct, that's not bad. I just hope it performs at all distances, not just portrait work.

I wonder why 105 vs. 135?

Will be interesting to see how it compares to the Zeiss MP as that's what I have now.

^^^
135 is probably next. 1.8 with VR most likely.

Hmmm... I have the F2 DC (great bokeh/backround) and the 2.5 Ai-S (lovely on skin) at 105mm, I also have the 85mm 1.4G (pretty good at both).

I can buy it immediately if I want to but I'm finding 105 is best for outside and I lusted after the DC for ~12 years, I've just become aware of this lens

The long awaited replacements for the 105mm f/2 and 135mm f/2 DC lenses?

Nikon Rumors listed the patent for the 135 quite some years ago. So I'm sure they have it in their pockets but are holding out. I believe Nikon released the 105mm because they didn't want to reduce sales by releasing the 135mm f/1.8G lens in tandem. The two focal lengths essentially share the same niche role.

I often find myself using the 80-200mm at 135, so 135 seems ideal for me.

I'll wait for the 135/1.8G and the 70-200/2.8 VRIII to hit the market. This is the most exciting news from Nikon in a long time the D5/500 didn't get my loins moving. ; )

This is an interesting focal length / aperture combination.

I didn't think any focal lengths past 85 could continue the 1.4 pro build / 1.8 consumer build thing. I thought we'd be moving to around 1.8 / 2.5 with the ~100.

But I am confident the 135 can't continue the 1.4 / 1.8 thing. There's no way they're making a 135 faster than 1.8. There's not the demand for a 200/2-class lens at that focal length. How long the DC's have gone unreplaced tells us there's little demand at that focal length *at all.*

So does this rumored 135/1.8 have a pro build? That would be confusing as they've well established 1.8 as the "consumer line." And if it does have a pro build will there be a consumer build 135 at ~2.5-2.8? Or will they just let the 1.8 be consumer build and leave that focal length *without* a pro build, as they've done at 20mm and 28mm?

Mitakon introduced a limited edition 135 1.4 late last year (100 total across a few mounts including Nikon). Manual focus for around $3000.

I think there would be a market for it if it was a typical Nikon AF lens for around the same price.

I want to see how big this lens is. 1.4 is bloody amazing at 105. Imagine that creamy background separation. I think this lens will give the 200mm f2 a run for its money.

This should give you a rough idea:

A 105mm f/1.4 requires a 75mm front element. So you can expect a minimum filter thread of 77mm or 82mm. That's probably why any 135mm DC update should be a f/1.8 lens (same front element size as 105mm f/1.4) as a f/1.4 version would require at least a 100mm filter thread.

Someone throw up a pic of the $3000 135mm 1.4 E VR lens that's coming next year.

Oooh! My 105mm f2.5 was a favourite of mine in the manual focus days. However, my eyes aren't what they were and sadly AF wins every time I grab a lens for portrait work. This f1.4 sounds very tempting.

I doubt it would be close to the same price, though. These days Nikon lenses are not aggressively priced. Plus the Mitakon was already massive, so by the time you add AF-S and probably VR...

Not sure.

That Mitakon is/will be very rare and a fair part of the price is because they are only making less than 100 in total. Maybe only a dozen in Nikon mount.

Nikon on the other hand would be trying to sell as many as they can.

Nikon may well be made with some lighter material as well.

I guess they would add a premium though so the price would be anyone's guess.

Mind you, that Mitakon is almost 1kg heavier than my old MF 300 2.8!

Also I'm pretty surprised at the lack of VR.

holy crap
this is really interesting!

it will probably help me with my prime addiction GAS
currently at
20 1.8 28 1.8 58 1.4 85 1.4 - all nikkor
I love my 85 1.4
But doubling my FL would make more sense.
20 28 58 105 - would be MAGIC!
dual wielding with 28/58 58/105, love this idea.

now I have to tempt @Elijah
since he made me buy a macro lens yesterday.
it's a team effort.

just WOW this is exciting!
pricey, but exciting.
