My favourite hoverflies- gentle giants at nearly 20mm body length. These lay their eggs in wasp nests where the larvae feed on detritus.

Brian,

Nice work with the stereo.

I have yet to see this species land this year.

I have seen several presentations involving the cross eye stereogram. Would someone mind explaining this to a newb?

It's a way of viewing a stereo image without the use of any apparatus. You just need to stare at the double image and cross your eyes so that a third image appears between the original ones- this one will be in full 3D. If you have trouble with that, try sitting about 2 feet from the screen. Stick a finger up about 4" in front of your nose and focus on that. You should see in the background the third image appears. Try to slide you finger out of the way whilst keeping the third image in view.
It takes a bit of practice but once you succeed you will find a lot easier after.
It is worth the trouble - good stereos are wonderfully evocative.
