My studio is really close to being finished. We did our first session for a quilters cookbook last weekend.
this is the setup. You can see that the walls aren't really finished and construction equipment is still in the way but so far it works.

Coolest part of the image is that I can see the shadow created by you on the backdrop.

I've worked there, looks like stage 3. They have a HUGH overhead soft box for lighting vehicles. Check-out the slide show http://www.southbaystudios.com/photo_gallery.html The light box is on the left on slide 7.

I guess I should finally post here. This is "my" space (the quotes imply a longer explanation that is not forthcoming )

Mostly Elinchrom stuff, but there's some Bees around too.

I can't believe this thread is still around. I first posted in it over 4 years ago.

This may be the longest lasting thread in the history of the internet.

Not a Studio by any standard. Just a small corner in my living room to take pictures of my kids. Due to children safety, lights are positioned beyond their reach!.

Thanks

Yasmin - What did you use to attach the hair and background lights to the wall and ceiling?

Just signed a lease on my studio space!!

Lots of people think I am crazy for putting out $$ during this economic crisis, but I'm an optimist!

I'll post some shots later in the week.

congrats! how much are you paying per square foot? Is this a storefront...or a spot in an office building/warehouse/whatever.

I'm about to do the same, and my thinking is....If I can make it in this economy, I'll be able to make it anytime.

I have set out a space in my house for now, but one year from March I set a goal to purchase a storefront to actually shoot from

I found a small space (~32x22 studio space), and across the hallway is my office with full bath attachment. Its great for a first studio!

They wanted ~$14/sq ft, and I paid ~$8. It is not a storefront, but rather a commerical office building with high ceilings.

Hi

I used this Bogen Adapter on the ceiling to hang Background light, attached to a safety cable.

For Hair light I used modified Bogen Wall Plate

Another alternative to the baby plate would be 3/8" "hanger bolts" attached to 3/8" female spigot (really a 5/8" stud). They are very cheap and easy to have muliple locations

Lag into a wooden 2x ceiling, just make sure to leave a little space between the sheetrock or framing and the stud so that your light and/or cam lock can properly secure the light.

Pat,

How long did the "negotiation" take? Did they go down to $8 quickly? Was it "Class A"? One year lease, etc?

$15 is pretty common here for downtown/main street. But even folks in the outer areas still ask $15, and I think they are nuts.

I am debating between going downtown again, and more of an office/warehouse space where I could do more printing and spraying (large prints and canvases on an Epson 7900 or 9900.)

But I am also sitting out the economy a bit - bad here in Michigan! Not working anyway for other reasons. Bored!

Congrats on the new studio. A lot of nice work on the web site.

Best,
Michael

Well, here is my studio I only photographed the shooting area, there is another side that I have laid carpet and plan to make it a sort of waiting area. Behind the backdrop is a storage area. The second is a sample of a quick shot, and a bit of a try at some photoshop.

Beautiful studio.

I think so, too; but it's not in the UK. That's Melanie's (unblinkable, here at FM) studio in Kinston, North Carolina.
