p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Quality of 24mm STM

Hi All, I'm thinking of purchasing the 24mm STM prime lens. I haven't been real happy with some of my zooms, even quality L lenses (24-105mm).

I am wondering if the 24mm STM lens (sells for about $150) is a good quality lens? The 24-105 is good except at the edges. And, I'm not talking extreme edges. I'm surprised at how mushy it gets. I also own a 20-35mm (not high end) and the 10-22mm (for APS-C cameras). These are ok, but again, pretty soft near the edges.

Does anyone have any experience with the 24mm? I understand it is a cheaper prime, but I'm thinking a cheaper prime may still provide overall better quality than any of my zooms? Got any opinion on it?

I shot landscapes and want more sharpness. (Yes, I'd love a 17mm or 24mm TSE lens, but can't afford those.)

Thank you.

I love, love, love the 24mm STM on my aps-c cameras. But I'm primarily a people photographer, not landscape. I don't ever feel that it is too soft, even at f/2.8. The only thing I wish is that it were f/1.8 or f/2.0, but then it would not be so delightfully small.

the 24-105 f4 is about the same n the edges on crop camera used at 24mm as 24stm

except for barrel distortion.

remember a crop camera only uses 2/3 of the lens - not the edges

So unless you need f2.8 you will be disappointed if your expecting better edges.

But if you want a small light prime the 24stm is good.

If you are going to do better than 24mm on 24-105, you will have to explore, in order of quality:
zeiss 25/2
canon 24-70 v2

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/MTF.aspx?Lens=780&FLI=0&API=3&LensComp=787&FLIComp=0&APIComp=2&CT=AVG

Both of which are quite expensive.

If you are swapping lens, and planning to stay with apsc camera though, I would explore canon 17-55 because 24mm on a apsc is 35mm which is pretty long to start a zoom for landscape. I think this is a better zoom lens for a apsc.

Thank you all. One thing I forgot to mention. While I would probably use the lens on my 7D, I would use it most on my fullframe 6D.

The 24 STM is an EF-S lens and therefore will not natively mount on a full frame camera like the 6D. If you anticipate FF, you might look at the EF 24 mm f2.8 IS lens instead.

Or you can get the EF 40mm f/2.8, which is the same size and equivalent focal length of using the EF-S 28mm on APS-C. I just sold mine because I barely ever used it (prefer the 50mm f/1.4) but the few shots I took with the 40mm were great.

I just realized that, Jeff and Max. Bummer, I am really looking for a sharper wide lens for my FF. Thanks for the help everyone.

The EF 24/2.8 IS is very sharp.

Sell your wide angle zooms and get a used, refurbished, or new 16-35 f4 for your 6D.

If you want a really sharp, cheap UWA for your 6d. Consider the Nikon 20/2.8 with an canon adapter. I bought a 2nd hand one for my a7r and it is pretty good and really cheap.

I would not sell the 24-105. It is weak from 24-30mm but from 30-105 at f8 its very good. It needs to be complemented with a good ~25mm option. The 24-70v2, Zeiss 25/2, TS24, or 16-35 are $1,000's. The 16-35f4 is a very good lens but its expensive and will leave you lacking from 35-105mm.

The 24-105 and adapted Nikon 20/2.8 is a good cheap compromise.

The 40mm STM on a full frame camera is almost equal in field of view to your 28mm on a 1.6 crop camera.

It's very small and regarded as a very good lens.

I went with the 16-35 f/4L and I'm pretty satisfied with it.

The 40 stm is a pretty good lens for size, money and quality combination. I have it but rarely use it because 40mm is a mm that usually does not fit my landscape composition.

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/MTF.aspx?Lens=810&FLI=0&API=0&LensComp=994&FLIComp=0&APIComp=0&CT=AVG

Its only downside is edges wide open (which is good but not excellent) and significant vignetting (and 40mm which rarely is the right mm for my landscape shots).

Given its size and fast speed, it is my best lenscap that takes pictures.

I think the 40mm is really nice, and suggest you also consider the 24mm IS if you want a smaller FF true 24mm. The 16-35mm is great, but a different kettle of fish.
