I'd like one. Wonder how much it would weigh & cost, and if the iq would be more super tele or super zoom?

As noted in the article, the patent has 4 different optical formulas, 2 for EF and 2 for Powershot. I could see this arrive in a powershot but the EF will never see the light of day.

Front element would be the same as 800 f/5.6. The patent shows the lens being 49cm long which is 2 cm longer than the 800 f/5.6. Also it is internal zoom like 200-400 and 70-200.

I can't see the optics holding up to that large of a zoom range (20x)....the 200-400 is only 2x to maintain prime like optics. The 100-400 only 4x.

The thing would be massive, expensive and not provide IQ up to the standards one would want at such a high price.

Just like the 200-600 patent that showed a massive lens and everyone thinks it will be like the Nikon 200-500. No one reads things anymore!!

I'd say a 40-800 f/4.5-5.6 would hit 5.5-6kg, $20K. DO would help size and weight but not price.

Very cool in theory, but definitely limited in practical use. Sigma's 50-500 and 300-800 are the closest lenses I can think of - the 300-800 actually had pretty good performance but the 50-500 just couldn't keep up with less powerful zooms. I'd imagine that combining them you'd get the drawbacks of both - and even if the optics were terrible they'd still have to price it at at least 12k just to make up for the costs.

As someone who pays very little attention to Nikon (as I don't use their gear) is the 200-500 any good? I see it's quite a bit cheaper than the 100-400 II but do you know how well it compares?

That's what I was thinking. People filming wildlife, sports etc could really benefit from it.
And even if it is not "prime-like", it hast the potential to do great despite the zoom-range if the output is ~2MP (1080p) or 8 MP (4K).

For sharpness alone the Nikon 200-500 is very similar to the Canon 100-400II. The Canon takes a TC much better. AF speed is faster on the Canon and AF on the Nikon is said to vary a lot depending on the body used. Using it on the D5 and D500 provides the best AF speed. I've only used it on the D500 and its AF response is slower than Canon but the D500 is very accurate with AF so overall it is a good combo.

I would agree about AF being largely body driven. Having had a chance to to try out the D500/200-500 combo I would say it is right there with the 1DX/100-400mk2. Way better then the 7D2/100-400mk2 combo.

Damn tempting for FL limited situations but it's just too hard to cross the line into dual mount ownership. Hoping that Canon doesn't sit on it's rear for 5 years again before releasing a new 7D.

Of course, a 5D4 at 28/8 would go a long way to resolving the situation and in a much shorter timeframe. Come on August.

Its not as hard as you think....well everything is backasswords but still I'm enjoying using my Nikon for things I used to use the 7D2/100-400 for.

They'd be the only ones to afford this, well Hollywood at least.

I'm holding out for the 6-1200mm f1.7 with the 6 axis turbo-stabilization ND built-in monopod!

It's also got an internal filtration system for dust, sand and fecal matter.

Supposedly it's been delayed because they are replacing the headphone jack from the beta model with Bluetooth 6.0

Meanwhile...All the Large Prime Shooters are still Shooting!

As crazy as 28-560 and 40-800 sounds, Canon already has a 28-300 and has had it for years. I don't think the 20x is that crazy any more, tamron has a 16-300, which is almost 20x.

But yeah, it would have to be at least as big as an 800/5.6, you'd think, unless it was DO or something. And a 560/5.6 would have to be pretty big, as well, you'd think.

Not sure either of these is that far off. Might be common in another 10 years.

40-800 for Powers hot would have to be an equivalent FL?
