My 300mm F2.8's nameplate is fading poorly. I searched online, but couldn't find a replacement for the older 300mm's. Anyone know where I can find a replacement?

Otherwise, if I paint it black, and then lightly sand the letters down, will they be silver or gold/brass? I'm not sure what the actual material of the nameplate is made from.

It adds character. You should see the name tag on my 180mm f/2.8.

Does anyone know what the material is? Is it pure brass? If so sanding it down slightly should reveal pure "gold" color and then I would look pretty much new.

I like worn looking gear. It reminds me of all the good times I had using it.

You do anything to that and then you'll start wanting to touch up the AF/MF selector, and then everything else. It is a slippery slope. I don't mind my gear getting some patina. Some of my metal lens hoods I coat the outside edge with gaff tape to keep from getting chipped and to soften if they tap against my car or anything else.

I bought this lens used. I am ok with Patina, if it is my own. I'm not concerned with the rest of the body, I was just hoping to make the name plate look a little nicer.

On that lens - high end at the time, I think it is mostly brass. Some kind of alloy, but mostly brass I'd guess. Don't sand it too far or you'll see silver/flat grey underneath

Check with a local trophy shop, they might be able to help you.

That name plate is brass to my eye. Museum guy here, we worked with restorers of everything from old watch and clock movements to incredibly detailed and ornate ornamental pieces. I'm willing to bet somewhere in the country is a top notch lens restorer; haven't researched that myself. For a lens made as well as these were, I'd think a restoration would be worth the investment, and could probably be largely recouped if you decide to sell the lens later on. Your piece has nice even wear, no signs of abuse in the one photo.

Ha, love this comment. I can see this as both a genuine comment about a trophy shop actually being able to help, as well as a sarcastic comment about objectifying the damn thing as some kind of shiny trophy. Probably not what the commenter had in mind, but funny to me just the same.

Unlike everyone else who posted here, I was trying to be helpful. No sarcasm intended.

I could make that look like new with some Testers modeling enamel.

Nikon uk can and will sell just about any spare part they can get their hands on. even a serial number if you wanted one. but,.,,..you have to have UK address so if u know anyone.....

also, look very closely at retailers from Singapore. they speak English fluently And have direct access to parts we as consumers (or authorized repair centers) would probably never get

I'd go the other way and polish the crap out of it...
That would be a good project for a year or so...

- cover with clear tape
- trim with exacto knife
- paint
- let dry
- peal off tape
- scrape off any paint that got under the tape with exacto knife or tool of your choice
