p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Shooting sports with a Sigma 300mm f2.8 prime?

Anyone use the Sigma 300mm f2.8 prime for sports? Reviews online seem to be positive although I can't get an accurate assessment of how good the AF locks and tracks. For the money, a used one seems to be a way for me to dip my toe into larger, faster prime lenses before I drop big money a 400mm 2.8.

Thoughts?

Hey Lion,

I actually have one and like it. I have used it with TCs and had no problems. It is fast to AF and tracks good.

I have to admit, I did the same thing and used it to dip my toe and recently got a 400mm. As a result the 300mm has been sitting in the back of the closet for almost a year.

I maybe selling it soon as it no longer gets the use it once did.

I had the older Sigma 300mm F2.8 APO EX DG Lens and it did not like my bodies, a D700 and D7000. Even fine tuning it multiple times, it was a mix bag of OOF and back-focus shots.

I used it mostly for low-light sporting events such as high school FNL...but between my bodies and this lens...it could not track or consistently provide in-focused shots. Yeah - I'm sure the photographer contributed to some, but I consistently got more OOF and back-focused shots than I would have liked.

My advice - save the money or find a means to get a either a Nikon or Canon version. I have a Nikkor VR1 and the performance, speed, sharpness, and overall output of this lens exceeds the 'difference between night and day comparison'. Shop the B&S boards - always seeing good deals. There are a couple of great deals on VR1s and occasionally the AFS-II version shows up nicely priced.

Not to add more confusion - but the Sigma 120-300/2.8 Sport gets a lot of good feedback from shooters here and nicely priced occasionally on the B&S board.

Anyways - good luck.

JC

Yeah, I was shopping this one... looks like maybe it's the older one?

I use Canon, but strategically I bought a 300 2.8, then went to a 400 2.8 and saved the 300 just because. It's wonderful for softball were a 400 is too much and it's great for a remote on baseball. Unless you want to sell one to make room for the next great lens, ensure you consider the options.

I had an old Siggy 120-300 2.8 and it was a focusing mess. Great concept, but never lived up to the potential (for me, anyway). I think the Sig primes are much better performers though. What's your budget?

I see the one you've posted and it is a bit older (EX model, but not DG for digital grade model) which should still be a good lens from everything I've heard. It's also a good, but not necessarily great price as I've seen them go for less. Also, if you shoot Canon, you could look into the non-IS models which, while old, are supposedly quite sharp and fast, and can be close-ish in price to what you've listed here.

Thanks. Yeah, this one isn't IS and I really don't have any desire to pay for IS on this setup. Shooting sports I don't feel like I need it considering the large price premium that feature tends to bring with it.

I am currently selling my Canon 300mm F/2.8L and my other sports shooting gear. It's the older non-IS version but the glass is in great shape. Last used it in June to shoot high school state track meet for local paper.
