p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Iceland - How wide ???

Hi All
I'll be going to Iceland later this year and I'm trying to figure out my kit needs in advance.
This will be a family trip with a bit of photography time, so I want to keep my kit lightweight.

Main question - is 21mm wide enough for locations like Jökulsárlón and stokksnes?

I do have a 16-35 F4 Canon but would rather take the 21mm Loxia if it's sufficiently wide.

Never been there, but most great pictures I saw are based on telephoto. I guess you probably also need a 100-400 lens.

I posted the details of lens usage here from my one month tour of the country. I forget the details now but (not including bird photography) it was something like 2,000 shots of which :

75% : Tamron 15-30 (most used FL was 15, then 18-21)
10% : Sony 28/2
5% : Zony 55/1.8
5% : Zeiss 100/2 MP
5% : other

That said it really depends on your style of photography. I'm going again in October (just to take my wife there for 5 days to try to catch the Aurora) and I'll be taking primes of 15 / 20-21 / 28 / 55 / 100 and two cameras.

I've never been to Iceland and neither have I ever been a wide angle shooter, but just wanted to chime in. I purchased a leica WATE a few days before my recent trip to Scandinavia but didn't bring it along (in fact I'll return it) and I'm very glad i didn't. Of course this is largely based on my shooting style (not used to wides, so wouldn't be able to compose well, and how I'm fine with just a 35mm to keep things simple and stitching if i had to).

Bring the Loxia and have a good time with your family. Small kit, native lens, keeps things simple.

My favorite shots from Iceland were with a Zeiss 21mm F2.8.

And a set of Lee and Singh grad filters.

I used my 16-35, shooting at 16mm mostly, MUCH more than my 24-70. I would recommend the 16-35.

For Jökulsárlón 21mm is sufficient. Most of my images shot there were either with 21mm or with 50mm.

For Vestrahorn / Stokksnes your definitely need something wider. 15/16mm is perfect there. But of course you could always stitch 2-3 21mm images for a great panorama image of Vestrahorn.

p.1 #9 · p.1 #9 · Iceland - How wide ???

I spent 11 days this past June in Iceland. Rather than doing the entire ring road I traversed from west to east along the south coast and plant to return in a few years to do the north. I spent 3 days in the Jökulsárlón region and multiple days between Vik and Reykjavik as well as days between Jökulsárlón and the eastern fjords.
My focus was equal parts birds and landscapes. During my travels I used only two lenses... a 16-35 f4 and a 200-400mm f4. There were many times when wider that than 21mm allowed me to be more creative with my images. While I have an 18mm Zeiss f3.5, I would have been frustrated if this were the only wide-angle I chose to bring.

YMMV,
bruce

I was in Iceland around this time last year and I was traveling pretty light even though it was a photography specific trip. I was just shooting on my M mount cameras (1 film / 1 digital) and I traveled with a 28/35/50/90 kit (close I know). At the time I was using a 35 f/1.2 so I really only used it when the light was low or if I definitely wanted a 35mm framing. The 90mm I almost never used, but it turned out to have a focusing problem anyways.

Essentially I lived at 28 and 50mm which wound up being perfect. There was maybe a handful of times I wished I had something wider or something longer, but not enough to make me want to carry it. I'm not much of an ultra-wide shooter anymore anyways, but I do have a 21mm Elmarit now so I'd probably have used that while I was out there.

Cheers Folks, just the input I was looking for.
Boris, you have convinced me the need for wider than 21. Your images of Vestrahorn / Stokksnes have firmly put that location on my bucket list.

So the question is do i put my trust in the metabones and go with A7r + Canon 16-35 F4 +
70-300IS, plus a few FE primes or rent/buy a canon body.

I guess that it depends on your perspective.

It's about 225 km the other way, give or take....

You don't even need to go there ... from Scotland should do it.

It sounds like you don't currently have a Canon body. I'd sell both your 16-35 and 70-300 and get then equivalent Sony lenses and take your A7R. The A7R has excellent image quality, the 16-35 and 70-300 are great Sony lenses and you remove a point of failure / image quality loss in a converter. I've been extremely happy with the results from my A7R along with the 16-35, 28mm and 35 2.8.

Unless you plan on getting a Canon camera in the near future...get rid of your Canon lenses and simplify your kit.

About 392 km, with a "full frame" camera.

Of course, you'd have to be airborne to see over the curvature of the earth; about 12km should do it.

I agree with Boris John...most off my shots from Vestrahorn was with Nikkor fisheye 16mm f3.5 Ai
fisheye is not exactly optimal.. so yes certain on that place is something wider good to have .. otherwise 21mm is enough for a lot

Cheers Ronny, I'll pack my 16-35IS with metabones.
I have a cabin booked for one night near Hof, so will have a day or so dedicated to photography, the rest of the time I'll tend to go out early and late and spend the daytime hours with family.
