Just picked up a 500 f4 VR (older version) and I'm thinking the MFD might be an issue for songbird photography.

How much light is lost when using extension tubes? Is it worth it? For the Kenko tubes, how much is the MFD actually reduced?

I tried to find information on this but did not discover much.

The MFD on the 500 VR is ~12'
If you're shooting THAT close...they're not wild, they're pets.

Actually, shooting from a blind I've had wild birds come as close as 2 feet. I have a full frame head shot of a Roadrunner taken from about three feet. His head fills the frame from edge to edge. As to the OP's question, I've used them but don't remember how much light loss there was.

Try this link , it should help answer the questions.

Extension Tubes

Not sure how much you are trying to reduce your min. focusing distance. If you get the Kenko tubes and stack them all , the connection to the lens can be very loose and unstable especially on the 36mm tube.

Min focus distance of the lens is 12.63 feet

12mm extension tube - 12.5 ft MFD
20mm - 12.2 ft MFD
36mm extension tube - will give you approximately 11 ft MFD

There is a loss of light , can be as much as 3 stops depending on the size tube and if you stack them. Extension tubes are not as effective on telephoto lens as they are on the shorter lengths. You will also loose the ability to focus at infinity with the tubes.
