p.3 #1 · p.3 #1 · Dead 200-400 what to replace it with?

Personally I would not get the 500 I would get the 600.
Firstly the new 600 is not that heavy being the same weight as the old v1 500.
The 500 is barely longer than the 100-400II and given how croppable that lens is is it worth dragging another long lens around for barely any extra length?
The 600 offers a bigger step in length and the ability to go 840 and 1200.
That's why I bought the 600 to supplement my 200-400 the 500 is just not long enough to make a significant difference I can't get through cropping the 200-400.
A 100-400 matched with a 600 for long stuff is a cracker combination.
If you are severely weight limited hey the 500 wins but I wouldn't travel with it if I was that limited and I had a 100-400II.
To me the 500 is simply not different enough to warrant the purchase given the quality and cropping ability of the 100-400II.
A marginal increase in focal length vs a significant one and same speed to me is the only choice if money etc isn't an issue.
Bad luck on your 200-400 hope it all works out!

I'd agree that if you only intend to shoot the 500 at 500 then it doesn't provide that much value over the 100-400II. When I think about the 500 or the 600 my thoughts go more to the 1.4TC and getting a 700 or 840 at f5.6. And even further to the 1000 and 1200 range. I often use my 600 at 1200 with great results.

Right now I have 200-400 and 600 but I've been considering swapping out both of those for a 500II to pair with my 100-400II. Problem is that selling long expensive lenses is a PITA especially being in Canada. I'd also like to swap my 300II for a 400DOII but again so much hassle

If I was the OP I'd consider the 500II or maybe the 400DOII. Otherwise if you liked the 200-400 then why not just get another.

He said a damp 200-400, not soaked or sat under water 200-400. The waves came and went. Btw, It was not a "bit" of rain, but a down pour and the gear was not in a bag, but fully exposed and being used.

I agree with the poster that suggest a 3rd party repair person.

The waves went where, exactly? Out the big hole in the bottom of the boat?

It's been my experience that when waves come into a boat, anything sitting in the bottom of the boat gets a little more than just "damp"... and it stays that way until someone bails the water out of the boat.

Just to clear up this "storm in a teacup" I was wearing the backpack that the lens was in. It was never submerged. We were wearing full immersion gear and the rogue waves drenched us and my backpack.

Thanks again for all the helpful advice and votes. Now it running neck and neck between a 500ii and a replacement 200-400 so I am conflicted! I really loved the 200-400 and my default position is still replace like with like. The 500ii as a supplement to my 100-400ii might make more sense though.

If you analyzed all your shots using the 200-400, what percent were at 400mm vs 560mm?
If the majority were at 400mm or greater, with a goo number at 400mm, why not strongly consider the 400 f2.8 ii? It is just creamy and you would notice the bokeh difference vs the f4 @ 400, for f4 @560 vs f5.6 from the 200-400. It would be more versatile (down to 400) than the 600 or 500 and could also take the 2x iii for f5.6 at 800mm.

I love how one has to embellish things to support one's theory. I'm glad the OP made it crystal clear that it did not get submerged, even though it was clear, at least to me, in the original post that it did not get submerged, but wet.

You win. You are the water on gear expert.

What did the insurance company say? Did they request that you send to a repair facility of their liking or did they take Canon's word?

I have submitted all the insurance paperwork including canons assessment and received and email saying that they are processing my claim. Fingers crossed. Not sure there is anywhere else in Australia that could repair a 200-400.

Molson lets keep the tone civil. There is of course shit here - in the sense that "shit happens" as I learnt through this likely very expensive boat ride......... Canon continue to be extremely helpful in resolving this and I will soon have a brand new 200-400 - hopefully with help from my insurance company as well.

Decided to close this post now - thanks for all the advice.

See my new post: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1440903

for a postmortem including some of the images Canon provided of the damage to the lens

Depends on the vessel. Self-draining decks are common.

FYI: If you happened to make your original purchase with American Express your warranty is doubled and you might be able receive a new lens or make repairs. Thats if the lens is less than 2 years old?
