I think the metal hood on my old 28mm F2.8 D is made of Unobtainium. It has taken some Nokia-level direct hits.

+1
Metal hoods are the best lens saver ever. They are dirt cheap too.

There is no dogma like lens hood dogma. Anytime now someone will post that you will get cancer if you don't use one.

I'll use the hood on my kit lenses for another support point because they're so small and light, but I never use them on my 70-200 or 300. Just more crap to mess with. As lens protection? Seriously?

Unless it's raining.

Very important, as my camera and lens are on a sling, and the lens can knock against things - so I prefer that its the hood that does the knocking

With a nice lens hood, how does something hit the front element?

I ditched my bike and put some deep grooves on the front and top of my helmet. I am glad those grooves were not in my head. Without my helmet, I would have spilled my marbles all over the road. With a helmet, I walked away.
