p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Greeting and 1st post in Wildlife forum

This is my first post in wildlife forum.

I use my 400mm lens mostly for sports. Got a D500 and thought ... why not trying some bird photography? And what better place to ask for tips and advice than here 8>

Anyway, here are a few I took this week. Hopefully, the seasoned photogs can help me on these questions:

1. Can somebody ID the 1st bird?
2. I did some BIF with 400/2.8 lens + 2x TC mounted on a monopod for about 1/2 hour and got a little motion sickness 8<. There are divided views on using gimbal head vs handheld for BIF shooting. Given the weight of my lens, I am leaning towards using a gimbal head. All my gears are RRS compatible and I am just wondering if I should go with their PG-02 FG or the Wimberly. Appreciate if you could share your experience. Thanks.

Warm welcome to the N&W Forum, it's a very talented and friendly community that is fun and educational.

Nice sharp detail in the eye and head area which is most important, well done.
I would be tempted to tighten the crop in #1, loosen the crop in #2 just enough to include the whole tail, #3 is very nicely composed for my taste, and again I would be tempted to crop a bit tighter in #4.

I'm sorry I can't help with the ID for #1... and I only shoot handheld so I can't offer any advice on head selection.

Very nice set of images with beautiful backgrounds in the perched shots, nice work.

Welcome aboard. These are very nicely done. I'd make a guess that the first is a female red winged blackbird. The beak, streaking, and shape would indicate that. Although most females don't have this much yellow, I've read that it can happen. Anyway, that's my guess.

Welcome! Wonderful first post . The first one is very interesting , but I can't find the ID . Beautiful detail on these, very nicely done.

When I was shooting the 500mm f/4, I used a monopod with the RRS MH-01. On the tripod, I use a Jobu Gimbal.

Look forward to seeing more from you.

Welcome to the N&W Forum, Lawrence (is that your name?)
You did a fine job on these captures. They show bright colors and sharp detail.
I always shoot IF birds hand holding the camera. Lately I have been using the lightweight 400mm DO MkII (Canon) with extenders.
Your first Bird looks like a female Red-winged Black Bird in bright colors.
Keep shooting and keep posting.

Welcome Lawrence. You are off to a very nice start. You can't go wrong with just about anything from RRS, but the Wimberley gets high praise here too. Having said that, I shoot the 500 F4 ver II handheld probably 90% + of the time. It's much easier for me to track that way. However, if the subject is tied to a particular spot, (eagle in nest), I will use a tripod. But if I see and adult approaching the nest, I will normally remove the camera from the tripod to shoot the incoming bird. YMMV ~ Ron

Well done and welcome. The female RWBB works for me, too. For me, the gimbal only works for the larger, steady flying birds. I started with the large Wimberly but now enjoy the practicality of Sidekick.

Thank you all for the warm welcomes.

Lots of things to learn obviously. I got Steve Perry's e-book on wildlife photography and almost finished. I will keep asking questions here for sure 8>

Wonderful opening post, H317! Love the crisp, colorful images even though I can't help you with the bird ID.

I now use handholding of my gear almost exclusively. I prefer the flexibility it offers vs tripod-mounted but I admit my results are not always stellar or as detailed as yours. I'm still very much in practice mode and hope that as I get used to shooting with the gear, I can refine my technique to improve my results.

Welcome aboard and thanks for posting.
