General question- would it be worth buying a low mileage d4 or would d500 or d750 be better option?
Shoot corporate events (often no flash but decently lit speakers) flash ok for general networking sessions
Sports - high school / top level soccer, lacrosse, wrestling
Portrait/head shots

D500 is about ideal as a nature photographers body. D4 at the right price would still be an excellent choice for what you do. It's funny how a state of the art body becomes old and useless as soon as the replacement comes out (nothing personal). Been watching this happen since the early '70,s when the F2 replaced the F. I still have a D1X that is ridiculously slow compared to today's standards but it still produces excellent images...

Depends what you are replacing. If D3 series maybe not as an upgrade but good if replacement is all you are looking for. I didn't see much difference so I waited and bought a D4s and D500 to replace my ageing D3s bodies. Really like D4s better than D4 which is no slouch. If you are coming from older than D3 or moving from non pro body for sports then yes it makes sense as an upgrade for your primary activities. That's my opinion only.

Thanks for replies!
I have a 7d2 but am not enamored with image quality, especially as ISO goes up vs full frame (only a couple lens' so not tied to canon too deeply)
So a low mileage d4s would be a better option?

a D4 is a fantastic body! I would shoot landscapes with one if i had the dough to get a D4.

The D3s is STILL an amazing body and arguably still king of low light... just sayin'

D4 is still great, but for this very types of shooting I'd seriously look at D810, or used D800

If new to Nikon the D4 is a very good starting point and likely would be cheaper than D4s. Either way you will be in good shape for events and sports.

The price difference between a D4 and D4s didn't make sense for me.
Used was $2400 vs $3600 from what I was seeing.

Just bought a D4 to replace a D3s, even though the D500 was looking good the D4 just brought more to the table for sports imo.

I haven't tried the D500, but I'm pretty sold on full frame look and I absolutely love pro bodies. You can add a grip to the D500/D750, but it does make it overall larger than a D3/4/5 body. Battery life is really nice on the pro bodies as well.

Only way I'd go with a D500/D750 is if I absolutely had a need for smaller/lighter (hiking and traveling).

I have a D4, D750, and D500. For events I like the D4 and D750. For Sports I like the D4 and D500. It kind of depends on what the conditions you are working under. The pro build of the D4 is great and much better handling than a small body with a grip. The D4 shutter is very loud though, and at 16MP its a little less if you need to do heavy cropping than the other bodies.

That said, I sold my D4 when I picked up the D500 because I thought I wouldn't use it as much. But then found a killer deal on a used D4 and picked it up because I found I was missing the handling and robustness of the body. The D500 makes for a great lightweight kit though. For high school sports in dark stadiums or poorly lit gyms I think the D4 has a slight edge in terms of high ISO noise, while the D500 has an edge in AF. I intend to test them more extensively head to head once Fall sports start.

What did the D4 do that the D3s couldn't?

I'll buy one again.. LOVE that 16mp D4/Df sensor. The D4 has everything you could ever ask for.

It really wasn't a big difference. 16 mp was a plus. Focus points changing based on orientation was something I lusted for. Ergonomics in vertical orientation are definitely improved. XQD has its benefits. Little things.

My D3s stopped working so it wasn't that I replaced it because it wasn't doing something but more that I went with something different when I needed a new camera.

I'll add that if you do any night or astrophotography, the D4 has the cool option to light up the buttons. I found I don't have to use my headlamp as often as with other camera bodies. Very nice feature, but some may never have the need for it.

I have D3's but I'd upgrade to D4's in a heartbeat. Every incremental step is better.

For what you're doing the D4 is ideal. I just got a D5 and between it and the D4 there just isn't a ton of difference. (Although there is enough difference for me personally to justify upgrading for what I like to shoot.)

That said the D4 is still a heck of a camera - and I could easily get 85%+ of the photos I'm getting with the D5 with the D4.

The D4 will suit especially given the price saving over the D5.
