p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Tamron 24-70mm purchase

I am off to Pebble Beach for the 2017 Concours d'Elegance in August. I have evaluated all my current lenses and can't seem to settle on the right one. I need a lens for details as well as general purpose, walking around. I won't have time or space to change lenses. I am considering the Tamron 24-70. One vendor, Shop Smart Deals on Amazon sells it for about half the other prices. I don't know how to evaluate that offer. Thoughts? Beyond if it looks too good to be true....

My criteria for a medium zoom is sharpness. Thoughts? Suggestions? Alternatives?

If you're going to be outside and the weather will be nice, another alternative would be the Nikon 24-120. It's pretty cheap, rather sharp and has more reach than the 24-70.

I think I see the listing you are referring to and it certainly doesn't list anything out of the ordinary. However, this almost has to be a grey market lens with no warranty. You just can't offer a brand new lens for $400 cheaper than everyone else without some kind of "gotcha" attached, it's not possible.

My copy took three trips to Tamron to get the centering and AF right and now it's perfect. I've read others have had sample variation as well. Based on this I would recommend buying the lens from an authorized dealer so that you have the option to send it in to Tamron for any needed adjustments (or make sure the grey market dealer has a good return policy).

My copy decided to lock up when zooming from 70 to 24 during a wedding. It's like the inner barrel wasn't centered any longer and I couldn't zoom. I sent it to Tamron and they say it suffered shock damage. Mind you I've never EVER dropped any of my equipment, I don't loan it to anyone, I don't abuse it. They sent me a $254 repair bill and are sending it back to me tomorrow. Expensive lesson that they don't really stand behind their warranty and can claim it was abnormal damage anytime they wish.

When it comes to a 24-70 f/2.8 workhorse lens, I think you should go with a Nikon unless you really want the VC and can't afford the VR model!

I'd get a used Nikon 24-70 2.8 AFS instead unless you absolutely need VR, then the Tamron from an authorized dealer would be the way to go since budget seems to be a concern.

Thanks all. Good advice. They only have a 30 day return and I have to pay postage. I believe it is grey so I will pass.

Almost every 24-70, whether it be Nikon, Tamron, or Canon have surprisingly high sample variation. It's one lens I would want to be able to return/exchange without the hassle of dealing with the manufacturer.

Very happy with my tamron 24-70...found a used copy here that the previous owner didn't report any difficulties with, compares very well with the work my friend gets with his Nikon, I primarily use it for shooting music in smaller clubs.

Same here with my Tamron. Mines a workhorse and used in high dust environment and never had any issues. Love it!

If the Nikkor 24-70 f2.8 is out of your price range then maybe look for a used Nikkor AFS 28-70 f2.8. I find it to be sharper than the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 I which also own. The Nikkor has produced some excellent images and one of my favorites.

The risk is that the 28-70 can suffer from failure of the Silent Wave Motor with a squeak noise indicating it is on the way out so if you find one at the right price check if the SWM has been replaced or factor in the price that it may need to be replaced in the future.

Cheers,

You didm't mention if you're using a FF or crop body. i've been to the Concours a few times, and having something wider is really nice. Either way, I'd recommend a 17-50/55 f2.8. Going wider than 24mm will come in handy for car and "event" shots, and 2.8 is great for all of the festivities at night.

It's a party, you're going to have a great time.

That is a grey market lens. If it needs servicing you are screwed. I bought a tammy from canada that needed adjustment a yeat later. No one would touch it. I somehow got amazon to take it back though on the grounds that the listing dis not say it was grey market.

If someone is selling a lens for far less than others, expect only trouble.

Does Sigma still have one? A friend of mine has a Sigma that looks good, haven't used it, though

Off topic: Does the Onion bokeh issue has been resolved for tamron 24-70 lens?

I remember there was some complain about onion bokeh earlier when the lens first came to the market; resulting many upset photographer returning this lens.

If you don't need f/2.8, I can highly recommend the Sigma 24-105 f/4 ART lens. I've been thrilled with my copy.
Tack sharp.
