p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Golden-bloomed Grey Longhorn - Agapanthia villosoviridescens

I was in my garden, among our fruit bushed when I saw a very striking-looking insect on a currant leaf. My view of it was from its rear and and at some distance. My impression was of a huge, predatory bug. On getting closer, I saw that it was a longhorn beetle. It looked sort of familiar but it might well be a new one to me.

Anyway, I got some shots. It was very three-dimensional, requiring all the DOF I could muster. In due course, most of them required a little more processing than usual.

I tried detaching the leaf so that I could manipulate it to get a head-on shot but misjudged the COG and it toppled before I could get a good one.

On checking, I found that it was the same species as I found in 2012, on a thistle (larval food) in a riverside meadow. An image of that one is posted last.

EM-1, Kiron 105, f16, twin TTL flash, hand-held.

Here is the 2012 one, shot on EP-2 and probably the Leitz Wetzlar Elmarit 60mm macro.

Good detail and color and an interesting insect. The flash seems a bit strong to me as the glare in all but #2 seems a bit high. Before I noticed you used a flash, I thought a polarizer might have helped reduce the reflections.

The flash is metered off the subject and diffused. It is a fact of life that some leaves are unhelpfully shiny, and reflect in many planes. Given time, which is usually not available, trial and error could optimise the angle. However, flash guns may have to be aimed more along the axis of the lens than ideal, just to get the light through gaps in foliage. Insects on foliage are a whole different matter than butterflies on flowers.

Thanks, Mark.

I hope it will establish on our few thistles, one of which I rested my face against during a recent shoot on the adjacent blackcurrant bushes.

Thanks, Birdie.

I see only one or two species each year.

Flowering shrubs (lots of tiny, crowded flowers) are attractive to some on sunny days.
