Here are a couple examples of why I recommend and love my Nikon 18-300VR (newest version).

Boat racing downtown Nashville on the Cumberland river.

As versatile as it gets and pretty darn sharp for such a wide zoom range!

Nikon D7100 Nikon 18-300VR

First photo zoomed all the out at 18mm
Second photo zoomed in to 260mm

18mm

260mm still had 40mm of zoom left

OP - so what did you choose? I'm in a close predicament. I've lived in SF and NYC, so I know I'll want something wide, and 2.8 for the DOF on a DX body as well as better low light focusing capabilities. I don't want to buy any DX lenses, but I'm thinking about the Sigma 17-50 or Nikon 17-55. I'll only buy 2nd hand if I can try them first or return them. I just had a terrible time with the Tokina 11-20 (x2), and Sigmas in the past (although Ive heard on here they're better with QC nowadays).

Options are limited for a fast, standard DX zoom. I consider the Nikkor 17-55/2.8 to be overweight for walkaround, but the ultimate choice for events, parties and foul weather. Rigged for business:

Alternatively, I used the D500 plus kit zoom 18-55 VR II at our 4th July parade, and it handled brilliantly as a one-handed P&S. Horses for courses.
