p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Upgrading from a 1DS Mark ii to a 6D or 5D3?

I've got a 1DS2 and I'm seriously considering selling it and purchasing a used 6D or 5D3. Which would you recommend? The 1DS2 is a fantastic camera, but it's a bit slow and is a brick. I'm traveling to London/the UK in three weeks, will be there for a month, so I'll be shooting some landscapes, but also lots of people, street life, architecture.

There's currently a 6D and a 24-105 L on the buy/sell thread I'm looking at for $1400 and a 5D3 for under $1300. I've got a 200 2.8L and a 28-135 IS (but it's gotten wobbly again and has some dust inside so I likely won't bring it).

Thoughts/comments?

I'd go for thr 6D kit, especially with a lot of travel coming up.

I agree with JColwell, the 6D kit sounds perfect for your needs. The 24-105 + 200 2.8 would have you covered for most travel needs. I'm very happy with my 5D3 but I wish it weighed what the 6D does.

I can't comment on 6D vis-a-vis 5DIII because I only own the latter, but I had 1DsII and loved it. However, I sold it when it fetched something worthwhile. These days, I'd have hung on to it because one won't get jack for it. As you know, it's a fabulous camera.

As far as ergonomic ... the 5Dmkiii come closest with the joy stick and AF points.

Have you put both camera in your hands?

Probably the 6D is just fine for your vacationing needs.

Just not a fan of the 24-105 ... it is just me. Love f2.8 and faster glass.
but will say the 16-35mm f4 is sweet with IS.

I have a 1DsII as a backup for wedding work.

Thanks all. Looks like the 6d package sold. Maybe I'll just keep the 1ds2, which, yes, is a fantastic camera, and upgrade on glass.

I went from 1Ds to 5D3. 5D3 for the AF, 6D for the price.

I do like my 6D because it's small and lightweight. However, I also loved the 1Ds2 for the ergonomics and the auto focus. If you had more glass, I'd suggest the 5D3 but since you don't, I'd go with the 6D and get a lens or two.
Also, my previous body was a 1Ds2 and I instantly found the ISO's so much more usable with the 6D, especially anything past 800. That being said, going through some older pictures of my niece and nephew made me miss my 1Ds2 as well as my 85 1.2. There's just something about the 1Ds2 files I like.

Weight wise...the 1Ds2 and 5D3....the 5D3 won't be an issue...but the 6D will feel cheap

Features....you will feel left out on the 6D (especially in AF points) and love the 5D3

ISO...6d slightly better...but 5D3 is no slouch...and compared to 1Ds2...you'll love
the range on the newer bodies

Overall....the 5D3 will offer many value options to choose from...the 6D will make you
feel like your using a "rebel" series full frame

Long run value to me is in the 5D3.....but economics on the 6D will allow for other
accessories

I have and and love all three for different reasons. If weight and shooting above ISO 800 are important to you, then get 6D. If build quality and great AF is also important then you will have to open the wallet for the 5D3.

If you feel the need for an upgrade, I would definitely go with a 5D3. I'm a prime lens fan and would think about a 35/2IS for your trip.

How does the 5D3 compare to the 1DS2 in weight?

Think I'm going to take the brick (1DS2) with me (just bought a "new" Canon EOM battery--I know they stopped making them in 2011), so now I'm looking at lenses. Thinking of a 16-35/4 or a 24-70/4 (can't afford the 2.8s) and either a 70-300 L or a 100-400 (series 1) L.

Thoughts?

The 6D is a very good camera with great image quality. Used it in Europe for 12 days to cruise down the Danube and got some fantastic images. Make sure you take a wide angle lens like the 16-35. This was my most used lens and then the 24-105.

Enjoy.

I too used a 6D for Europe. I really needed that hi ISO capability. I found the 24-105 good but for many shots it was still too long, especially after cropping to correct perspective distortions. The other great advanyage of the 6D was it fitted into my man bag so I was able to sightsee with the camera without shouting 'rich tourist' every time I went out.

Keeping the 1DS2, bought a 24-70/4, a 100-400 L IS (first version), and 40/2.8 pancake. I'll be lugging that.

I think I'd leave the 100-400L at home for a European holiday. Africa yes, but Europe is wide angle territory. I have tacked a European holiday on the back of an African holiday, the long zoom, essential in Africa, just got in the way in Europe.

You blew it!

I had a 1d3 (not the same, obviously, but the controls and AF are similar) and a 6d in parallel for a while and for pictures where the subject isn't moving, the 6D really amazes me. The sensor is spectacular, it really is. Can't comment on the 5d3, I suspect it's close.

For Europe though, I'd leave the 100-400 at home. I went to Italy last year with a 24-70, a 17-40 and a 70-200 and I don't even think I took anything out of the bag other than the 24-70.

Leaving the 100-400 home would definitely save weight but I'd feel very limited with just 70mm at the long end. The OP also has a 200 f2.8 and could substitute that for some weight savings. My usual travel lens kit for FF is 24-105, 100-400, and either 16-35 f4 or Voightlander 20 pancake (9 oz) depending on weight/space constraints. I have found that if I need more than 100, I usually will need more than 200 so I lug the 100-400. But then I try to travel to scenic places with some natural aspect. Everyone's milage will vary.
