How good Nikon is in cameras and optics, that louzy are their collars and tripod feet (no dovetail, com'on)

Best alternative:
Kirk

Nikon is still fighting over whether the dovetail goes lengthwise or crosswise. Word is they will do the opposite of anything Canon does.

Yeah, the OEM has about 10 degrees of flex right out of the box.
I ordered the Kirk replacement the same day. If you ever sell or
trade the lens, you can turn the collar in 5 minutes flat. It's great.

Sometimes people look at these collars as expensive, and they are. However save the original collar and when you sell the lens, separate the Kirk (or RRS) and you should be able to get at least $100 for it. So it's cheap rental for vastly better support...

RRS solid as a rock, a must own. Love mine.

Love my RRS collar for that lens. The OEM one is horrific.

I went with the RRS because I can make it fit in the lens case. It's very good. Nikon has a history of making piss poor tripod mounts for these intermediate sized lenses.

Both the Kirk and RRS are great. I just went with the RRS because it's small enough to fit in the case the lens came in. I pop the bottom piece off and place in the netting that's on the zippered lid.

That's assuming you have a nice ballhead on your tripod!

Just get the RRS collar replacement and accompanying RRS foot.....for your 80-400 AFS and you will not look back. There was a thread here several months ago about this and I made a comment. I am not going to be long-winded about this here. Please find that thread.

Just get the RRS collar and be done with it. There is no doubt it is superior to everything else out there....IN EVERY WAY. It serves as a great handle too. In short.... I love the RRS collar that I put on my 80-400 AFS.

BTW, for those who say that the KIRK is good because it has that second "out front" support....guess what?:

My 80-400 with a Nikon body with its accompanying battery grip filled with batteries....balances RIGHT at the lens collar. There is no need for any forward support. Besides, this RRS's grasp of the barrel is super solid....yet buttery smooth when rotated. Just get it

Have you removed the factory collar and cleaned it and the area where it wraps around the camera?

I only have the collar on the lens when doing autofocus fine tuning. The rest of the time it is off the lens and I shoot 100% hand held, even with a TC20 teleconverter attached. It is kind of the point of having VR on a lens.

I just bought a used RRS collar and am testing it now vs. the stock plastic collar.

But the stock plastic collar doesn't really seem that bad to me (in casual use). Remember any flex has to be movements that can induce blur in the image, or you are just talking about a subjective matter of feel & enjoyment.

...the VR also cuts way back on the need for any pod too
