p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Anyone hook up their Sigma 18-35 to D500?

I have a free rental with a company, and I wanted to give the D500 a test shot with 18-35 Art from Sigma. I heard this lens have great reviews from owners. I haven't seen any shots with it on the D500.

I recently purchased this fart lens to see what the hype was about. I primarily plan on it being for astro and indoor (without flash) lens. It has not been on my camera yet.

Let us know how the rental works out on the D500.

I bought one recently and found that it kept front focussing on my D500. I tried the D500's fine focus option but it made no difference.
Also, I found that the Sigma at F1.8 could not focus accurately using the D500's outer focus points whereas, in comparison, my Nikon lenses were spot on.
I spoke to the dealer and they recommended that I buy the USB dock but I was not keen on spending any more on it. I returned the lens and they said they thought the lens was fine!?

What was your conclusion? Stinky?

That's what happens when a third party doesn't share it's secrets with a camera company.

I have found that with a variety of lenses a variety of AF methods are required. very shallow DOF models require finesse. sometimes methodology trumps technology.

when you are having AF issues you should give info as to what AF pattern/method was being used when issue occurred.

Unfortunately there might be an element of truth to the focusing issues. In the DXXX forum at DPreview, it's been discussed at length. The Global vision lenses seem to have an issue with outer focus points on D500.

Good point, but I tried all AF patterns/methods and the Sigma at F1.8 front focussed and couldn't use the outer focus points but my Nikkors at F1.8 were fine. I believe my copy was faulty, although the Dealer disagreed.

Interesting, I hadn't read that on DPreview. Doing wedding photography I rely on AF and the Sigma would be too slow if I had to MF instead - I recall the days when I used a Mamiya RZ67 and they are long gone, thankfully!

Disappointing to hear about these problems, hopefully an update with the dock can fix this. I just started to look up the 18-35 and 50-100 and they seem like really cool and fun lenses that would shine on nice DX bodies. Sigma has stepped up their game with their new lineup. I wish Nikon made something similar.

I hope this gets resolved because I really want to try those lenses out.

Not to hijack this post, but I just bought the 18-300 Nikon version. It should arrive tomorrow. Anyone had any issues with that one?

B&H has the 15-30 paired with the 50-100 for 1899.

Many Nikon lenses front or back focus on Nikon cameras. My Nikon 300 MM f4 (non vr) requires zero fine tune on my D90. When I add the Nikon 1.4 tc it still takes zero fine tune. This is the ONLY camera this duo works perfectly on. All other cameras require either + or - fine tune.

It's the other way around.
The camera maker doesn't share it's secrets with a third party (if the third party doesn't want to pay for the patents).

Wonder how much Sigma's value proposition would change if they paid licenses to Nikon. I'm finding with each Nikon generation of cameras, fewer and fewer of my Sigma lenses work. What used to be a live view issue at D90 generation is now complete lack of AF at Dxxxx generation. Has me rethinking my loyalties.

Yup. Canon has no such problems

I can confirm the same issue, looks fine in the center but completely misses on those outer edges
