p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Canon vs Samyang 24 1.4

I just bought a Samyang 24 f.14 for astrophotography. I heard there may be problems with the QC of this lens, so i tested it out. I have 2 questions

To my disbelief, I actually found it shaper than my Canon 24 1.4 II - specifically, in the left. Notice the white stones on the building. On the Canon, it seems to be very lacking in contrast and sharpness.

1. Why is that? Do I have a bad copy of the Canon?

2. On the right side, however, the Samyang seems to be less sharp than the Canon. Is this decentering on the part of the Samyang?

Left Side (Canon on the left, Samyang on the right) - notice how the Canon handles the whites on the building. Seems blurry? Dont know how to describe it

Right Side (Canon on the left, Samyang on the right)

Center (Canon on the left, Samyang on the right)

Why are you showing comparison of a Sigma to a Canon when the title says Samyang?

canons 24/1.4 isnt great for astro.

Samyang is the goto astro wide.

Sigma is comparable, better consistency though the best sy is probably better sy tend to be all over the place.

Right. I'm concerned about the inconsistent QC issues of the Samyang which is why I did the test. The right side looks a tad softer than the left. What do you think?

Astrophotography being a specialised branch of landscape, perhaps even galaxscape, it's pretty brutal on lenses. I am not entirely sure, but I presume Canon designed the 24mm f1.4 (mostly) as a low light photojournalism tool - in which coma, etc matter less.

Yes I know. I'm including the 24 in the comparison only to serve as a second reference point. I doesn't compare against the Samyang when it comes to coma.

What I'm curious to find out is whether the Samyang is indeed decentered with the right side out of focus in the above images.

Also, I was additionally surprised by how soft the Canon was on the edge, and was wondering if I have a bad copy of the Canon as well.

I just got the Samyang so if it has issues I'd like to know now so I can return it

Couple of questions…

1. Isn’t the Samyang a manual focus lens? If so, is it possible you didn’t focus it properly?

2. How is the sharpness if you stop the lens down?

I had thought about my focusing, but if it's because of that, wouldnt the left and right side be equally out of focus? Here, it just seems the left is not as in focus as the right side - at least it appears that way to me. Do you see it as well?

Sharpness is great stepped down. Better than I expected. Samyang is definitely weaker than the Canon at f/8 but pretty strong for 1/3 of the cost nonetheless. Here are the test photos for f/8

f8. left is Samyang, right is Canon

f8. left is Samyang, right is Canon

Since you bought the lens for astro, let's see some star photos and compare.

The Samyang vignettes more at f1.4 by the look of it as the Canon corners are brighter. That all I can see that is worth mentioning apart from the poor other side of the Samyang. -probably indeed some decentering. At f8 they are much the same. As to being surprised at the Canon sharpness in the corners - no this looks fine. The Canon 24mm f1.4 has never been considered stunning in the corners wide open.

Real world astro photos wont be at f/8 so the testing at wide open is the start, now grab some stars to see how it stacks up.

Download, print and assess your results using the Zeiss Star Chart. That will tell in a heartbeat if your lens is decentered.

LensRentals.com had an excellent article in this. You might sleuth around using Google to see if you can find it. DpReview did publish that article but I didn't bookmark it, sorry.

Good luck,

Charlie

You just need to take some images of the night sky, live view manual focusing on center, left, right, top, bottom and make sure it is all sharp across each of the frames.
With pin point stars, decentering is easy to see. My third samyang 14mm was great.
When the Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 came about, I sold the sammy.
If the Samyang 24mm were sharp enough wide open, I'd have kept mine, but shooting at f/2 vs. f/2.8 is not a great advantage to me. My first copy was quite good.
