Hi folks,

I just added a cell phone my father to our AT&T account.

Now he has a Verizon Prepaid account that he no longer needs with a balance of $735. He has been paying $15 a month for years for an "emergency" cell phone that he only rarely used when he was on vacation.

I have changed the account information to be in my name. There are 2 things that can be done with the balance:

1.) Use the account balance with a Verizon Prepaid Smartphone plan, at $30, $45, or $60 per month, or

2.) I can create a Verizon postpaid account, and have them transfer the balance as a credit to that account.

The cheapest postpaid account is $30 a month, with WiFi only data. The plans go up from there, according to teh amount of data required.

My dad built up his balance by paying $15 a month for the most basic plan, which only charges when you use the phone. To keep the account active, you need to "add" $15 per month. So with a $45 a month plan, you would have a new "gain" of $30 a month.

Instead of adding $15 a month to keep the account active, you could add $100 once a year. Then you would get $45x12 = $540 of service per year for $100.

If you had a $60 per month account- with free calling to Canada and Mexico- the difference would be $60 x 12 = $720 worth of service for $100. That would probably make the most sense.

I know this is a little "different." Please research the Verizon Prepaid wireless plans. You can bring your own, existing phone to the plan. (My dad was just using an older style, basic flip phone.)

I could also sell you a Nexus 5X that is only about a week old at a good price. My son insists that he needs a Samsung Galaxy S7 instead on our AT&T plan.

If "selling" the account with the balance here doesn't work out, I will probably just use the balance to buy a smartphone (or two) for my son and wife.

Please send me a PM with any questions. Thanks.

Best,
Michael
