There was at least one person who has posted images on forums that showed cracked frames on the D 800. I'm not sure if it was from using the tripod screw or something else.
When I carry a camera with a heavier lens, I always hold the lens in my left hand as I walk. Might be kind of difficult though with two cameras.

their cracked frame has nothing to do with the tripod socket as they are not interfaced directly other then being on the camera together. I demonstrated that awhile back.

some were saying that the tripod socket was built into the frame. that was proven not to be true

If the lens has a tripod mount I use that, if not I use the camera mount.
Don't forget all modern cameras have a plastic mount (except Dx series and D800).

not a true statement

D7000 is metal
D7200 is metal
D500 is metal
even my Fuji X20 is metal

Mr Dees I owe you an apology

on the D500 the base plate is made from a reinforced polymer material. but, the threaded tripod socket is still made of metallic alloy. an has a large relative surface area and multiple screws holding it in place. reference this exploded view:

I am using this kirk quick rellease that I screw into my rrs camera plate! Much better setup this way, faster if you want to use the tripod and camera plate.

or you could use the better designed RRS adapter clamp that offers you both more and better options:

the 1/4-20 threaded sockets or the QD socket.
