p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Eastern Sierras in early October?

When do the leaves generally start changing color on the eastern side of the Sierras ?
What kind of temperatures to expect in Death Valley in the first 2 weeks of October?
Thanks for your help!

The prime color season (at least in typical past years) in the eastern Sierra usually starts around the beginning of October and continues on through the third week, with the color starting high and then moving down to lower elevations and final to Owens Valley and other east side locations. If you want a pretty certain time for good color, try about one week into the month. If you are flexible, watch various reports and be ready to go at a moment's notice and more than once. (You can sometimes find some color earlier and later if you know where and when to look.)

(I post updates each fall as the season unfolds, and I am the author of a popular book about photographing fall color in the Sierra.)

As for Death Valley, it will still be pretty hot in Death Valley in early October, though not quite as awful as during the hottest months. October is more summer than winter in California, especially early in the month, and while it is a transitional month, it can still get quite hot. The NPS has a chart showing monthly temperature information.

If Dan's not going to do it, I will. Dan wrote an outstanding book on photographing the falls colors in the Sierras. Excellent reading and a very good resource. Comes with everything you need, except an exact prediction of the timing of the fall colors for this year! For that, monitor this section of FM, as Dan usually gives up to date reports on the color progress.

Here's a link to buy Dan's book.

October is, IMO at least, one of the better times for bristlecone pines

In general, with or without aspen color, early October is my favorite time in the high elevations of the western US mountains.
