Sorry I'm late to the party. My searches yielded nothing, so if anyone can shoot me links to the various threads on this I'd be grateful. Basically just want to get a feel for IQ, AF with the extenders, how the lens does with the 2X, issues, etc.

Thank you!

Sharona, it exceeds f8 with the 2X so manual AF only, so I don't use it with it for this reason. I do use the 1.4 III with it ALOT. They are excellent together. I am sure there are lots of pics on here using this combo but I don't know where exactly without looking.

Thanks Kathy! I have been using my 1.4 III with it, and in good light I am shocked at how well it works. I have never been able to make extenders work for me, so this was such a nice surprise. But you can only use center focus, right?

Yes, I'm pretty sure that is right. You're going to love your new lens. Congrats.

Sharona, I don't know if you used a V1 or not but the VII is good at so many things the V1 was not. I don't hesitate to grab it for daytime sports and the V1 was IMO anyway, was worthless for sports. I use mine on both a 5DIII and a 7D II . It's great on both. Oh, and be sure and try out close ups with it. Flower shots etc. The MFD is amazing, and it plays very well with extension tubes if you want to go even closer. I love this lens. It's just so versatile.

I think this depends on the camera. With that combo I think the 80D will focus on 27 points, the 1DX2 still has all points, the 5D3, 7D2, 5DS/r, 1DX should all focus with center and center with 4 helpers. All other f8 capable bodies will only have center point focus.

Here is a cool page for focus info on the various bodies. AF Info

I find the 2x III IQ is not really acceptable. The 1.4x III works well on a low res body like the 1Dx or 5D III, but the IQ degradation is more noticeable with the 5DsR. In decent light I get better results with the 5DsR and no TC compared to the 1DX and 1.4x. The 100-400 II is an excellent lens, but don't give up your 500/4.

Here's a thread with some 100-400 II + 1.4X TC

I think there's a better one that had a comp / game using the 100-400 II + TC, but I didn't find it yet. Others probably know which one I'm thinking of as well.

Thanks for all of the replies, everyone! I am using the new 100-400, and the 1.4III. My bodies are the 5D3 and the 1D4. It plays very well with the 1D4. And the 1.4 extender. Amazed. But when I tried it on a tripod for semi-static birds with the extender, without the ability to move around focus points, that was a problem. Not a huge issue for me, as one of the things I love about the lens is that I can hand hold it.

I don't own the 2X, and can't imagine I'd want to try it anyway, but was curious, given how well it does with the 1.4.

I see what you're saying now - yes, I had the version one, and when I first bought it I loved it, but it was an old copy and this new one - to me, the improvements are really impressive. :-)
