Heading to western Arizona this month to visit my parents. Have been there a few times with the usual photos. Looking for something more unique and interesting.

I'll be in Quartzite for the most part but plan on hitting a other towns such as Lake Havasu.

The KOFA reserve is not far from there. I had never had any luck with it but Marc Adamus shows what talent can do.
Google "adamus kofa" for a treat.

Western Az.
June.
Oh Boy!

A morning stroll in the KOFA mountains.\
https://www.fws.gov/refuge/kofa/

Prescott is only about 2.5 miles away. There's a pretty lake, lots of trees, and much cooler air to breathe!

Sedona is ~3.5 hours. Not exactly next door, but well within range of a day trip.

Rent a boat and see the rugged (and, yes, HOT) Parker Dam / Lake Havasu region. Perhaps a night time cruise?

Run, don't walk to the nearest mountain at least 6000 ft elevation.

Quartsite is really going to suck in June.

Been there a few times. I normally go there in December to visit my parents but my father is no longer a spring chicken and needs a fence fixed for his dogs so off I go to replace a 100 feet of fence...

I've been to Havasu, Needles, and Laughlin several times. Prescott has been a fun trip but dislike Sedona because the drive down is not my favorite thing especially in the summer.

I'll probably do some night photos in Havasu and some desert star photos. Lots of space and not lights, it's the only thing going for that part of the state

The KOFA Mountains should make a respectable horizon / foreground for night-time sky shots.

Lord have mercy, the story gets worse. You have to work the fence. Sympathy to you.

Good news, after tomorrows 118 there is a cooling trend.

At least it will be a crisp DRY heat.

R.H. in the single digit, dewpoint in the teens or low 20s.

This sort of heat (114 predicted Sat. Death Valley will 'only' be 5 degrees warmer.) is lethal. If the car croaks while driving on some remote road in KOFA, you too can be dead by nightfall.
Let people know where you are going and always carry at least 5 gallons of water in the car. (More won't hurt!) That should keep you alive for a day or two....

Now boys go easy on the lad. Yes, it is 118F mid-day in the Kofas but that does not mean that he needs to be out past 9am or before 6pm. Temperatures in the early morning and late afternoon are completely manageable. The bigger problem is that most of the cholla will be wilted/black. Milky way shots over the Kofas should be double though, right around midnight with S/SE facing comps - which is essentially all of the Kofas. The shot below requires a 10 mile drive on rough roads and a 3 mile hike thereafter, and I would not advise anyone in their right mind to attempt it this time of year, but the easily accessible parts at the beginning of Kofa Queen Canyon should be slam dunk at night.

I like the hot weather. Havasu sunsets are pretty special. I like to shoot from the Island with a lighthouse in the foreground. Also enjoy early morning boat trips up to the gorge. Usually, see plenty of big horn sheep, plus the beauty of the gorge from the water. I might suggest a trip to Oatman.

Cheers, Steve

Mid-late June may bring the awesome monsoonal skies and weather.
Western AZ occasionally gets a good blast of moist air flowing north out of the Gulf of California.
(The models are teasing this very scenario for the June 11 time frame. This far out, take with a large dose of salt!)
Come prepared to shoot lightning! (Cable release, tripod.)
The uncluttered landscape along 95 south of Quartzite is ideal for storm / sunset shooting!

The zone of high pressure is being pushed east.

The Palm Springs cable car, about 2 hours away, can whisk you to 8000+ ft and rescue you from the insane heat.

The monsoon pattern is likely to go a very unusual East-West this week, I will be watching closely and may make a run for the Kofas next weekend if it is looking like a monsoon will clip Western AZ
