Anyone tried using this combination on a body that focuses at f/8? Wondering how the AF is and if it would be suitable for consistent moving objects (e.g. continuous AF for an airshow where you know the performer's routines well)

In this case I'd be using a 5D III, not too concerned with IQ yet, being able to focus is the first key.

If anyone does have this combo does dock customization help at all?

I tried it with contemporary and a 7D Mk II. It would only AF in very bright contrasty light. I wound up sending the combo back to B&H.

For a start, if you are racked out to 600mm without the TC, you are at f6.3, not f5.6. So with the TC on, you are at worse than f8.

You would get far better performance and as good or better IQ shooting without a TC and using a 7D2.

However, with good light, you may get good enough AF for tracking planes. I doubt the dock customization would help much, but that is JMO.

I've tried the 150-600 C version with Canon's 1.4 extender. AF works, but is slow and image quality isn't great.

. . . also, if you have the latest lens FW, Canon 1.4X III will no longer work.

Canon 1.4X II however will still work

Thanks, I wasn't aware of that. As you surmise, I was using version II of the 1.4 extender. Didn't even bother to try my Canon 2.0X III, which does work nicely with my 200-400 F4L.

In what way won't it work? I ask because I'm using a 150-600 C with the latest firmware, a 1.4x III and a 6D and everything "works" fine. I have to focus manually, of course, but other than that, no problems so far. That combo also "works" fine when paired with the Fuji X-E2S.

I believe the AF will not function. However the sigma 1.4x will work AF-wise

It used to be able to AF on f/8 capable bodies. After a FW update Sigma stripped the function without telling anyone in the FW notes and with no way to go back. It stopped working on my 5D3, 7D2 and 1DX.

The 1.4TCIII does still AF on 1D4 just in case anyone has that body and likely on older bodies also.

Ah, so it's only a problem for fancy f/8 capable cameras. I guess I don't have that problem
