Got up at 4:30, was parking at 5:30 for a 6:00 AM sunrise. Started shooting about 5:45 for blue hour.

I have seen better clouds here and of course better water conditions. I dropped to ISO50 and went up as high as f20 to get longer exposures and some water smoothing. I don't have a ND filter for this lens. I sold all my nd Grads. Maybe I will invest in a screw in stopper.

Let me know what you think. These are all single non blended images.

Ben, these are all beautiful. I think my favorite is #1, with the weeds sticking up in the bottom left corner and those cool clouds above the mountains. I'm not a landscape specialist but what I see I like!!

Thanks Steve, I really appreciate your take. Too many landscapers get into a rut, it's always a treat to hear from a non landscaper who is also an accomplished photographer.

I prefer 3. I like the left to right brightening, matching the increasing height of the mountains and the forest. And the wedge shape made with the reflection. Also matches the rock and snow striations in the mountains themselves.

But they're all great, you do such nice work.

#3 for me as well. The light here is much better. The water is calmer in #1. Would have liked more still water in #3.

Thanks Matt and James.

I do need to get an ND filter to slow this down. THe first shot was taken in very low light so a long SS and less ripple. The ripple is caused by the inlet stream and is a constant. Last year the water was higher and was not as much affected.

The progression here was 5 sec, 1/5 second and 1/13 second. 5 seconds makes a big difference.

Ha! Good luck choosing one Ben! I know I can't as each one has it's own strong points and are all fantastic images.

Strong points as I see them are...
1) Smooth water. This is why I asked you about using an ND. This is the perfect candidate for such a tool IMHO.

2) Color in the clouds and that magical "first kiss" of light.

3) Full blown gorgeous warm light. Really makes it pop!

The only small nit I have is the weed in the water. However, because of how strong the entire images are, I'd say this is a very small issue. I'm not even sure how well that could be cloned out, especially with the cloud reflection right there.

Nice work Ben!

Dave

Thanks Dave, I am pretty happy with them considering the construction and light. The light on the mountain was about 5 minutes late and not intense so it must have been cloudy at the horizon which is out of sight from this point. Also the water level was higher last year.

The goal of construction is to increase the impound volume, so maybe next year will be better?

Last years for comparison.

As one of the members here relearning ( more precisely learning) photography, I think each image stands well on its own merit..Different lighting yielding a different and profound image. Personal taste is just that ---personal. I'm not sure if the grass works for me. I've been looking for awhile but still the jury is out. Love all 3.

My 2 cents worth.

Thanks, I left the grass in, I sort of like grass if its in focus. But normally the water level makes this a non issue.
