p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · RE Lightroom CC "Edit in Photoshop" and ACR

As I recall, in the past when I selected a raw file with no edits in Lightroom CC, and chose the Edit in Photoshop option, the raw file opened first in Adobe Camera Raw. Now, when I do this, the file is opened as a pixel-based layer in Photoshop CC.

I am running the latest versions of both CC programs. Is this a change in Adobe's workflow between Lightroom and Photoshop, or am I missing something?

Thanks in advance for any help!

I dont think the workflow has changed but I'm not in front of an LR machine right now to verify but your 'memory' is the same as mine. Are you *sure* you have no LR edits? and that you're sending the .cr2/.nef/.raf/whatever raw over to PS?

This may also be worth some time............

Thanks for your input. I have done this with multiple different raw files, and yes none had any Lightroom edits.

and you're sure that it's not opening as a Smart Object in PS?

No it's not, although I am aware that I can choose Edit As Smart Object and have raw file editing capability. It opens as a normal pixel-based layer.

Hi rytch0
The normal behavior when you are running compatible versions of LR and PS is that it will not visibly stop in ACR along the way to going into PS. It actually does go through ACR to apply any adjustment settings you chose in LR as the default operation is to render in ACR and not LR

However, there is a circumstance where the LR image will open up in ACR with these conditions:
1) You previously had LR and PS version with out of sync raw/ACR versions
2) You have LR External Editing Preferences set to TIFF or JPG and
3) respectively you had the PS raw option set to edit TIFF or JPGs to ACR first
4) and when in LR and using the Edit in PS, you selected the option to render in LR (note that this option will not show if at any point you selected "don't show this again" checkbox)

Under the above combined set of circumstances, after rendering in LR, it will also open up in ACR. This will not happen when you have compatible LR/ACR versions.

Hope the info is of some help.

Your welcome.

Also, another side benefit is that you won't get those (I consider) annoying extra copies of your images in LR as you will when using incompatible LR/PS versions.

As stated, it could be because you are opening TIFF files. I had a problem with my old MBP (2008) where it wouldn't read my CR2 files, so I had to convert them to DNG or TIFF files. TIFF won't open in ACR as far as i know. I have CC 2015 btw.
