Jut as the topic asked, what DX end is your ultimate all around versatile lens. I am looking for something you can keep on the camera a majority of the time. I see the 16-80 gets some really good reviews but is it really worth 500.00 over the 18-140? Thanks all!

Sigma 17-50 f2.8 OS. It beats all the prime lenses within the focal length, period. AF is fast enough for cycling photography too....

Oh, don't think the 16-80 f2.8-4 is a great lens though, according to this review....

The 35mm 1.8G DX is the best $200 I ever spent on a lens.

18-55 kit zoom is my top choice. I bought the VR/VRII versions as factory refurbs, and they are light, cheap as dirt, and fine performers. I happily overlook the plastic mount and near-useless manual focus. If I want weatherproofing, speed, and slightly inferior optical performance, I use the 17-55/2.8 monster.

Back when I shot crop (D200) I used the 35mm f/1.8 DX, the 24mm f/2.8 AF-D and the 18mm f/3.5 Ai-S the most.

On DX the 55mm f1,2 was my lens to go.
I though that with the switch to FX I would move to the 85mm f1,4 but the 55mm f1,2 remained glued to my camera

Tamron 17-50 2.8 non vc. Not really through choice because of size and weight but its very good, better than the primes which I had when I got the D7000. (24/2.8af and 35/2 af).
I also use the 35/1.8DX now and a 24/2.8 Sigma Superwide II which is a lot better than the Nikkor 24/2.8 I had.

I bought the Nikon 16-85mm VR lens about 2 years ago when I decided to stop at Mammoth Cave. I bought it used for around $ 400 and am very happy with the images and VR. Some image had blur, but others were pretty sharp in the cave. I don't think that there is a perfect lens. And I wouldn't want to spend all that money on the newer 16-80mm Nikon for a marginal difference in sharpness.

Plus 1 for me. By far my most used lens and has just about killed off my Nikon 35mm 1.8

Plus 2 for me. Sigma 17-50/2.8 OS is sharp, compact, and versatile.

Tamron 60/2 macro was the other one for me. Sharp, light, and very useful double-purpose lens for close-up / macro and casual portraits.

Sigma 17-70 os. Been with me as my go to lens for five years. Great close-up capacity, good bokeh, nice range from landscapes to portraits.

Another vote for the sigma 17-50 2.8 OS. Super sharp, small, does focus somewhat slowly. Amazingly inexpensive too.

I'd probably rather have the new 16-80 but I've never owned it.

Same here Siggy 17-50 2.8 OS. Hard lens to beat for price and versatility.

+1 for Sigma 17-50 f 2.8, plus with OS works great with D5300 and D7200.

Nikon 17-55 f/2.8 for the win. I had the Tamron 17-55 non vc but sold that off.

Yeah, the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 OS is a no brainer if you want a zoom. Stupid cheap, good build, accurate, SHARP, and fast. My only gripes are the backward zoom (like most 3rd party lenses seem to have) and my hood doesn't stay on that well anymore.

The 35 f/1.8g DX is the obvious choice for a standard prime. 52ish mm FOV, fast, sharp, light, small...the whole package really. You can do the 50mm f/1.8 if you'd like a bit more length or supposedly the 40 macro is nice as well, if short macro is your thing.

Not tons of choices for DX specific Nikon lenses, but most of them are pretty good. Not too many stinkers, though I shy away from anything with a variable aperture. This is personal preference.

Sigma 17-70 for most situations.

35 f1.8 DX for almost everything else.

Focusing is slow Hehehhehe...are you sure? I don't want to bust out some of my race photos to show the otherwise... Like closeup wild angle panning shots...
