Why are the used prices on D800 so low? They are similar in current prices to the Canon 5Dii and much less than the 5Diii.

I am a Canon shooter but the prices on the D800 have my attention as I will be buying a new body soon.

D800e is more desirable, D810 is newer, and D750 has better AF. So, there are lots of substitutes for the D800 which drives the price down. Still, it is a very nice camera.

Used D800's are the best bang for the buck in DSLR's today.

I been keeping an eye out for the D800E, but some of them have a bit of a premium compared to the regular used D800 where it makes it compete for a few $100 more to go pentax K1.

The reason the D800 is so affordable used is because there is a newer model that's more desirable. There was also some manufacturer problems with some early models like the left focus issue. I think the reason the 5D II pricing hasn't tanked completely is because of the videographers.

D800 can be a hell of a deal used.

Absolutely. IQ is pretty indistinguishable from the D810 the only real fly in the ointment is live view if you are a big LV user (I'm not) and apparently D810 has better af.

Prices for what is 95% of the best dslr on the market are amazing value.

Thanks for the replies.

Now I have decide if switching systems is worth it with having to start all over with glass.

The D800 was up to 1000€ cheaper then the 3Diii since it came out. At least here in Germany. The reason could be the D800e. The 3Diii and the D800e had about the same price, so the price of the D800 had to be lower.

This made the D800 a great deal since then. Its still great and didnt got any worse because the 3Dii is overpriced :-)

Why switch?

If your glass is in order, the body is not that important. Just ride the wave of your chosen brand.
It's been documented many times, the body is the least expensive part of a camera system. I think Thom Hogan had written an article about that once.

Honestly there's a negligible difference between the d800 and D800e I've owned both and still own an 800

the D800 is a solid camera any reason you want to jump ship to nikon from canon

I don't see any reason to "jump ship". Simply add the D800 to your gear collection, starting wtih a few choice lenses such as used 14-24G, 50/1.8G, or Zeiss 35/2 ZF.2. You can also add inexpensive AI/S lenses, and nice aftermarket like the impressive Sigma 24-105.

I've been enjoying the D800e for over a year now, while continuing to use my more extensive Canon gear too. Also, this year just entered the Sony arena with a7R and can now mount lenses from FD era through the newer lenses for Nikon and Canon.

I think it's hard to expect one brand to be able to be all things, even to one photographer. Different needs and interests arise. With the low prices for these types of used gear, it is easy to justify expanding the collection to add versatility.

Go grab a D800 and a lens!

Low prices are great for the buyer, not so great for the D800 owner looking to swap it out for the D810.
Reminds me of when I sold my D700.

Still, for the handful of years I've owned a D800 the price per month of service was totally minimal.

Yeah, I'd would have liked to upgrade since I'll probably hang on to it for a while but just could not justify the price hit I would take. Fed of Nikon releasing fixed versions of cameras which hammer owners of the original.

Not sure about you complaining about price hits.
It's the market, and passage of time. There is an optimal time to sell new gear, where you recognize your loss and move on. But waiting and waiting until it's worth zero isn't correct either.

The $3,000 msrp D800 is now at an ask of $1,200 used.

However the newer $3,300 D810 is now at an ask of $2,100 or so.

Bite the bullet, collect your $1,200 and add $900.

Unless you want to ride the new D810 train.... The ticket down the hill is very expensive at this point.. From $2,800 new to an immediate $2,100... used price.

I have never been able to justify the huge files off of either of these bodies. BUT, there are times when I think back to that D800E thread and was just blown away at what I saw. Depth beyond depth on those images.

So for that reason, I'm keeping an eye out for a D800E body, and I'll have to deal with the files transfers and space when I cross that bridge. But, I too agree this model line is presently one of the best 'bang for the buck' pieces of hardware out there today.

I'm a little green when I see people's images off of these..

John,
I was a bit skeptical when I added the 800E to my D3. However, the file size and resulting storage and transfer rates were not an issue. Drives are cheap and the files transfer quickly on my Mac with a USB 3 reader.
There was a slight learning curve with the 800E but it forced me to concentrate on my technique. The results are well worth it!

I don't understand the 'huge files' argument unless you are into pro sports, weddings etc. and need to batch 2000 images regularly and res requirements are low.

The 5DmkII was 21MP in 2008. Now we have USB3 which is almost SATA HD speeds and computing power and storage has moved on too in the 7+ years. Often I think peoples' workflow just sucks or they store every frame they have ever shot.

Used prices are not indicative of quality of camera. I had the 5d2 (which you mentioned is similar in price, correct?) for many years before going to all Nikon gear.

There is no comparison....I mean, the 5d2 has a great sensor still to this day. But considering all other attributes, these bodies are in two different leagues. I didn't know D800 prices were THAT LOW. D700 prices have held on and are certainly higher than original 5d used prices...in fact, d600 and d700 retain same value more or less. I own one of the first batch D800 bodies released and probably will keep a long, long, long time (especially considering resale price).

That being said, for myself, there is no reason to "upgrade" to the d810. It would cost too much and the value -- for myself only -- is just not there to upgrade

I am finalizing my plans for a new body purchase in late June. I have had every intention to stay with Canon until I ran across a good deal on a D800 and started checking out the specs. Then I started shopping the prices on the D800 and it has me thinking. I do not shoot pro and just enjoy photography so going all in with $20k or more in gear is not going to happen. I'm kind of a $5K total kit kind of hobbyist still building my kit.

The D800 still intrigues me. I have a few more weeks before I pull the trigger.
